Gumx @ Jamsil Sports Complex, Seoul (15th Aug. '09)
Firing On All Cylinders
Currently in the midst of a five-week long Japan summer tour, Seoul's Gumx made a brief return to their native land for an appearance at the 5th ETP Fest, an annual event organized by massively popular Korean rock singer Seo Tai-ji.
Having played at the Incheon Pentaport Rock Festival in South Korea just prior to starting their Japanese jaunt, Gumx were well-primed for their late morning ETP slot. Making full use of their 30-minute time limit, the trio ripped through nearly a dozen well-played cuts in Ramones-esque rapid fire succession while the event's early revelers cheered them on.
A commercial showcasing all of the concerts' acts, which also included the likes of Nine Inch Nails, Limp Bizkit, and Tokyo's Boom Boom Satellites, ended with a robotic voice announcing Gumx's arrival. On cue, the trio emerged with guitarist and vocalist Lee Yong Won immediately walking to the edge of the stage to lead the audience in a chant of "hey."
Opening with the fast-paced "Bad Song," the lead cut from their new limited edition, self-released "American Standard" EP, the group instantly had the crowd dancing along to their infectious, punk rhythms despite the sweltering heat. A small circle pit broke out during the excellent, anthemic "Perfect" from 2003's "What's Been Up?" Drummer Choi Gun beat on his kit with reckless abandon during fun renditions of "Brit 'N Clit" and "Flower 'N Shit" while bassist Lee Keun Young shook his head and shouted backup vocals.
"My Bassist Likes This Song," one of the many standouts from last year's "Old," faded into closing number "Hymn To Love." Keun Young fell to his knees while playing and Yong Won ran to the front of the stage to sing along with crowd. Both huddled near Choi and jumped high in the air as he smashed his drums one final time finishing the song on a definite memorable note.
An ETP banner hanging from the side of the nearby Olympic Stadium asked attendees, "Would You Come Again?" If all of the day's performances were as solid as Gumx's you can be certain many fest goers will gleefully return next year for more high quality Korean and international rock n' roll entertainment.
Gumx's Japan tour in support of "American Standard" will continue until September 6. The remaining dates are listed below.
