Ennio Morricone @ Olympic Park Gymnasium, Seoul (27th May '09)
The Maestro
The second performance of a two-night stand at Seoul's Olympic Park Gym, legendary maestro Ennio Morricone captivated a near full house with an unforgettable set of some of his best known pieces.
Accompanied by the Gyor Philharmonic Orchestra and a full choir, with all 182 supporting musicians and vocalists seated on the large stage, the 80-year-old Morricone made his entrance at 8:15 p.m. to massive applause from an audience comprised of music lovers of all ages. After observing a moment of silence for South Korea's late former president, Roh Moo-hyun, the show opened with a fantastic recreation of the dramatic "The Untouchables” from the 1987 flick of the same name. Having composed hundreds of scores for film and television, along with "The Untouchables” tonight's opening theme, Life and Legend, also included stunning renditions of highly lauded songs from Once Upon a Time in America and The Legend of 1900.
Other themes included during the two hour plus concert were Scattered Sheets, The Modernity of Myth in Sergio Leone's Cinema, Tribute to Mauro Bolognini, and The Mission. And while all featured near perfect presentation and sounded nothing short of brilliant, the epic selections of The Modernity of Myth in Sergio Leone's Cinema made this section the highlight of the show. Starting with "The Good, The Bad and The Ugly", before moving on to "Once Upon a Time in the West", "A Fistful of Dynamite", and "The Ecstasy of Gold", all songs came off wonderfully in the large arena setting as the vast array of instrumentation filled every region of the venue.
After closing out the concert with the gorgeous, "On Earth as it is in Heaven", a thunderous applause erupted from the enraptured audience that soon turned into a standing ovation for the Italian maestro. With everyone still clapping Morricone returned to the stage several times to bow before conducting the first encore, "Casualties of War.” With everyone still begging for more, he returned for another take of "The Ecstasy of Gold", with soprano Susanna Rigacci once again wowing all with her remarkable soaring vocals. A third encore of "Abolisson” concluded this magical night.
Morricone first performed in South Korea in 2007. You can be certain that many of the patrons who witnessed Cinema Concerto Part II are praying for the maestro to one day grace Seoul with a third live showcase.
