Banger'd Out!
Its been a remarkable year for the Ed Banger crew. An increasing roster of releases and seemingly non-stop tours haven't shown the slightest sign of these DJs slowing down. That about 80 percent of the artists at Ganban night were released on Ed Banger Records, or at least close friends of Busy P (aka Pedro Winter) and company, fully resonates their presence and popularity in an international dance scene they've considerably reoriented.
The night started off with a warming up of the packed masses with sets by emergent Tokyo staples Dexpistols and 80 Kidz (who opened up for Boys Noize the last time he was here for Ganban at Shibuya Womb).Ed Banger CEO Busy P and So Me, who double times as the label's creative art director, started things off with their 90 minute sets that warmed up the speakers, and the crowd, for what was to come.
For me, and many others, the anticipation was all set on Justice and Boys Noize and thats pretty much all I'm going to talk about. However, one thing I want to mention is Surkin who played while Boys Noize (aka Alex Ridha) was taking care of business on the main stage. My friend in the French music industry has been non-stop haggling me about Surkin's inevitable emergence as the next big thing. I respect my friend's opinion however, nothing could really pull me away from Boys Noize set so I had to miss it, yet felt I had to mention that tidbit here. Vitalic wasn't really my cup of tea and rather homogenous so I opted to watch Crookers on the second stage; I've been a fan of their work for sometime now, especially their AC DC remix that's finally getting the play it deserves.
Before Boys Noize, Justice's DJ set seemed engaging as usual however, if compared to their previous performances in Tokyo which I've seen, I'd say it lacked a little something. Still amazing and awe inspiring in terms of how much power they can wield over the crowd, that little difference was that this was a DJ set, not an actual performance. Still, Gaspard and Xavier dropped their own singles as well as a handful of rarities from the depths of their record collection.
Although, I felt I could sense something when watching Justice in that present tense. I noticed their DJ set was more of a set up for Boys Noize to take the decks. Ridha slowly stepped on stage moments after Busy P and So Me emerged aside Justice to build up the crowds excitement. Ridha came on stage with his ball cap and got ready to throw it down.
The way Alex Ridha came on stage is worth digressing- I absolutely love the confidence Alex exudes on stage. It is a few steps shy of arrogance while pure energy and a crystal clear, exhibitionist love for what he does. Even his groove and dance moves, or even stage antics while playing add to it all. Whether its holding up the record he is about to play, getting the crowd to go crazy or ducking under the table in the occasional moments of pause or build up. Its safe to say Ridha engaged the crowd a hundred times more than Takkyu Ishino. Ishino was more of a robot, focused on mixing rather than showing interest in the crowd. Ishino threw down some hard beats but the energy level was not that of what Boys Noize is producing. At every single track which Ridha threw down, there was not one mistake- straight flawless.- proof that he is on top of his game. This is going to Boys Noize year and I think the Ed Banger crew know it. After Boys Noize, a good portion of the crowd was tired out and started to trickle out-satisfied they made the trek out to Makuhari Messe.
