Judas Priest @ Olympic Gymnasium, Seoul
Rock And Roll All Nite
A Sunday night didn't deter several thousand fans from descending upon Seoul's Olympic Gymnasium for an appearance from legendary metal act Judas Priest.
The lights dimmed as the closing notes of Black Sabbath's classic "War Pigs" faded from the arena's sound system causing the first of many thunderous roars to erupt from the enthusiastic crowd of mainly older rockers.A backdrop depicting the cover art from the British act's latest recorded output, Nostradamus, was illuminated as the disc's ominous, gothic instrumental opening "Dawn Of Creation" played.Members of the quintet began emerging as the track wound down paving the way for the explosive "Prophecy". With guitarists Glenn Tipton and K. K. Downing and bassist Ian Hill all swinging their instruments in unison, silver cloaked "Metal God” Rob Halford appeared atop of the two-tiered stage holding a scepter and began singing as the audience went into near hysterics.
Newer cuts such as "Death” and 2005's "Angel" from Angel of Retribution stood up well alongside time-tested, highly influential favourites such as "Breaking The Law" off of 1980's British Steel and "Electric Eye” from 1981's Screaming For Vengeance.A North American summer tour with Heaven and Hell, Motorhead, and Testament ensured that the always powerful Judas Priest were at the top of their game, delivering each loud, heavy selection with the same precision and zeal that helped establish them as one of metal's finest.
Knowing exactly what the crowd craved, there was no shortage of over-the-top showmanship during the 95-minute performance.Backdrop screens depicting different albums' images and the group's name were switched between songs, Halford sang one track while sitting on a large throne, flags were waved, and there were lots of flashing, colourful lights to accent each member's different rock n' roll poses.
A tight version of "Painkiller” elicited a whole lot of headbanging and air drumming from overzealous males. The entire band made their way to the second level of the stage as the cut wound down before making their exit.Chants of "Priest” brought them out again few moments later to play "Hell Bent For Leather", a thunderous roar greeting Halford as he rode out on a motorcycle, parked it, and sang the track without getting off.Calls for a second encore saw Halford come out alone and take a well-warranted bow.He engaged in some call and response interaction with the audience before pausing to unfold the towel draped around his neck o reveal a picture of the South Korean flag.He kissed and the towel and placed it over the motorcycle as the entire venue nearly screamed themselves hoarse. On cue the rest of the group joined him and began playing "You've Got Another Thing Comin'" providing a fantastic finish to a great night of killer music.Nearly 40 years after forming, Judas Priest left little doubt that they've still got a whole lot of metal left in them - long live The Priest.
