Envy, Bulssazo @ Rolling Hall, Seoul (18th Jul. '08)
Better Late...
Twelve years after debuting with 1996's Breathing And Dying In This Place, Envy finally made their first Korean live appearance. Considering it's only a two-and-a-half flight from their hometown of Tokyo to Seoul, you can bet that more than a few of the several hundred folks who filed into Rolling Hall were thinking, "What the hell was the hold up?"
Thankfully it won't take as long for Envy to make their return. Already in everyone's good graces after tearing through a remarkable set, vocalist Tetsuya Fukagawa's announcement during the quintet's encore that they were hoping to visit Seoul again next spring was met with a monstrous roar of approval.
Bulssazo entertained early arrivees with several fantastic, instrumental post-rock cuts. Playing a double neck guitar, Sangchul Han's back was partially turned to the audience as he faced bassist Myunghoon Seo and drummer Young-il Ko while performing. Illuminated by red, blue, and purple lights, Han and Seo kept things loose on stage by having a mini dance off during the opening notes of one song before delving into whole lot of angular, distorted sonic goodness. "Farmer From Hell" emerged as the highlight of the show. Bulssazo methodically built up and dismantled the track before finally morphing it into a tightly wound wall of sound that floored anyone with an iota of good musical taste in the venue.
After a short break, Envy walked out of the shadows to loud cheers. The melodic, atmospheric opening to "Chain Wandering Deeply" from 2003's heralded A Dead Sinking Story filled the air with anticipation as the crowd waited for it to explode into a powerful, hardcore-influenced whirlwind of sound. Moments later Fukagawa stepped away from his table of assorted pedals and electronic gadgets and unleashed the first of many impassioned screams as the audience went ape-shit at his feet.
Renowned for their innovative pairing of fierce screamo with soaring post-rock, Envy were in top-form as they presented the night's nine awe-inspiring selections in truly epic fashion. Fans eagerly pumped their fists and shouted along to the aggressive sides of favourites such as "Lies, And Release From Silence" as guitarists Nobukata Kawai and Masahiro Tobita whipped around while banging on their instruments. Full of textured peaks and valleys, subdued songs suddenly erupted into wild bouts of noisy rock before falling into near silence once again. Trying to guess exactly when the well-played shifts in tempo were going to occur kept newbies on their toes.
After closing things out with a fantastic take of "Go Mad And Mark," audience members quickly flocked outside to swarm the merch table. If tickets had been available for next year's concert you can bet that nearly everyone would have left with one. I know I would have.
