Love Camp 2008 in Hong Chon, Kangwon-do, Korea (31st May '08)
This Is Music
Seoul trio The Plastic Day (who are easily one of the best young bands in Korea) posted their appearance at Love Camp in Hong Chon city on their MySpace page. In the "cost" field of the listing they wrote "flowers and incense." They weren't joking.
Now in its seventh year, Love Camp was an amazing party held in a forest in Hong Chon that brought together some of the coolest cats in South Korea. The secluded site was a 10-minute walk from the end of a winding dirt road. Like The Plastic Day wrote, admission to the show, food, drink, and accommodation (camping under several large tarps) required no payment. Heck, even those without flowers and incense were welcomed with open arms. Stripping all the corporate crap from the big money making endeavours that music festivals have become, Love Camp was organized to bring likeminded artists and fans together to share their common love of song.
Surrounded by trees and a stream, a small stage was erected in the middle of a clearing and illuminated by a few light bulbs, candles, and a nearby campfire. As we walked past the peace signs that welcomed all to Love Camp, someone approached to ask if we had eaten. Replying "no," we were quickly ushered to a large flat rock on the water's edge where a woman began warming up rice and soup. She introduced herself as "mom" while dishing out food, and then turned to Smashing Mag's editor, the very talented Koichi "hanasan" Hanafusa, and cheekily told him that he could call her "honey".
Music started shortly after 5 p.m. and went to the wee hours of Sunday morning. A bevy of Seoul-based underground acts including Stretching Journey (whose turned out a goose bump-inducing cover of Hahn Dae-soo's "Give Me Some Water"), Oriental Lucy, Sagitta, the above-mentioned Plastic Day, and Japanese expat Sato Yukie performed highly entertaining, intimate sets for a crowd of maybe a hundred and fifty people. A few scaled down, acoustic tracks were coaxed out of Cocore guitarist Woosung Lee and drummer Jiwan Jung as well as the night wore on. Friendships old and new were built upon as locals and the dozen or so foreigners who learned of the cool, almost hippie-ish gathering (would "love-in" be a better word?) danced and talked while basking in the beauty around them. One of the night's best movers was a Korean man in a wheelchair who grooved along to the tunes on a paved area beside the stage with a handful of ladies.
Brimming with positive energy "Love Camp" was the perfect moniker for this unique, down-to-earth outing. I'll be back next year. I hope you can join us.
