The Moonshiners @ Rolling Hall Seoul (16th May '08)
Rocking Out In Style
Tonight's gig at large live space Rolling Hall in Seoul was about playing well and looking pretty damn good while doing so. Always well-dressed garage rockers Galaxy Express complemented their usual Johnny Cash "Man In Black"- inspired wardrobe with white blazers. Going with a slightly different approach, Rux's front man was made up to look like a crazed zombie while the rest of the band showed their love for past and present punk rock fashion.
As sharp as all those boys were, the best dressed award undoubtedly went to The Moonshiners. It's no secret that the quartet have a penchant for coordinating their outfits and at Rolling Hall they were decked out in matching black suits and neck ties as they entertained a mixed crowd of South Korean punk and underground rock lovers.
Despite their noticeable absence from the local live circuit for the last few months, the act showed that they hadn't lost a step during infectious opener "Forest Of The Monster" from last year's Uprising EP. The 60s-influenced melodic rocker had the audience grooving along from the get-go and a few even sang along with guitarist Jun Myung and bassist Chang U's back-up vocals. Things really began picking up during the second number as lead vocalist and guitarist Cha Cha became more animated. Falling down to his knees, placing his guitar on head, dancing, and heading into a small group of overzealous moshers at the foot of the stage to solo were just a smattering of the happenings that kept all eyes locked squarely on the charismatic performer. No slouches themselves, the rest of the band wowed with a seemingly endless supply of tight grooves.
Mixing vintage garage and pop with an unmistakable modern punk edge, the bulk of The Moonshiners' material would mesh nicely with the way-too-cool classics on Quentin Tarantino's Death Proof soundtrack. Well educated in the ways of rock n' roll, the band switched back and forth from soulful blues to harder edged sounds with ease on the fantastic "Lonely Lonely." During closer "Hitchhiker At Midnight" Cha Cha, Jun Myung, and Chang U each turned around and kneeled down to watch drummer Gyong Ho's solo before taking turns to show what they could all do individually as well.
Cries for an encore filled Rolling Hall before the group had even left the stage. Returning for one more slice of jukebox-worthy goodness, Cha Cha got everyone clapping in unison before counting the band in on "Sweetheart On Thursday." Pointing at the crowd and screaming "Sex" before doing several pelvic thrusts brought cheers and laughter from bouncing attendees who gladly could have watched Cha Cha's playful poses and antics all night long.
Striking a near-perfect balance between style and showmanship, The Moonshiners musical gems should go over smashingly when they perform at this summer's Pentaport Rock Festival, South Korea's premier music event.
