Gumx @ Club Spot, Seoul (15th Mar '08)
Saturday Night Fever
A stone's throw away from the main gates of Seoul's Hongik University, a young crowd filled Club Spot for tonight's "Slam, Moshin', Skankin'" gig. Sandwiched in the middle of the multi-band bill were local punks Gumx. Obvious crowd favourites, excited attendees eagerly packed in tight around the small stage as the trio emerged.
The opening notes of "Hymn To Love" sent the audience into hysterics as they pumped their fists to the infectious pop-infused cover from Gumx's 2003 debut, What's Been Up? An extremely fun take on the track, the energetic start carried over as the act launched into fast-paced Green Freakzilla? skate punk anthem "Loser." Drinks and random fans flew through the air as the entire basement venue erupted into a sea of pogoing bodies. Despite the rapidly increasing heat neither band nor audience were willing to let up with guitarist and vocalist Yongwon Lee cupping his hand to his ear during "Perfect" to incite even more noise from the boisterous crowd.
Scheduled to release their third full-length, Old, on Japanese imprint Toy's Factory at the end of April, Gumx previewed four numbers from the new disc during their 35-minute set. The first was "My Bassist Likes This Song." Those questioning the validity of the title should be pleased to know that bassist Keunyoung Lee did in fact look pretty darn happy while playing it.
Pausing briefly prior to "Needless Story," the sweaty Yongwon used a Tower Records towel to wipe off his face before draping it around his neck. Soaked audience members took the opportunity to fan themselves and get a much-needed drink. Feeling refreshed, both band and crowd geared themselves up for a strong ending. New cut "Million Miles" featured a great call and response bit while closer "GreenFreakzilla" caused mass dancing and a small mosh pit to form.
Screams of "encore" echoed through Club Spot as soon as the group finished. Quickly returning for one more song, Yongwon encouraged everyone to sing along to "Sonyo," which resulted in someone jumping on stage and acting as a guest vocalist for part of the track before diving into the crowd. As "Sonyo" wound down, Yongwon's mic got knocked over and on cue, fans packed up front sang the end of the energetic track, bringing giant grins to the faces of Yongwon, Keunyoung, and drummer Gun Choi as they made their final exit.
Gumx will tour Japan in support of Old in May. Dates can be found below.
