Cocore @ Club DGBD (29th Feb '08)
Get The Party Started
Taking place on the last Friday of each month in Seoul's hip Hongdae district, Club Day features the city's top underground and up-and-coming bands and DJs performing in over 20 clubs from late evening until the subway starts again in the wee hours of the morning. For 20,000 won (about 2200 yen) attendees are given a wristband that grants access to each establishment allowing for a full night of bar-hopping while seeking out Seoul's best sounds.
The 82nd edition of the infamous shindig made sure that early revelers got their money's worth by having heavy weights Cocore kick things off at Club DGBD. Alternating between upbeat grunge-y indie rock and abstract spacey shoegaze anthems, the quartet had little trouble keeping a mixed crowd of Korean and foreign diehards and curious on-lookers entertained during their hour long set
Ridiculously tight, yet still maintaining a very loose vibe on stage, Cocore added to their already varied repertoire with several awesome jam sessions. At times it looked almost like the group were in their practice space as guitarists Woosung Lee, Myungsoo Hwang, and bassist Jaegwon Kim stood with their backs to the audience encircling talented drummer Jiwan Jung creating a cool, intimate vibe as both the band and audience lost themselves in the sea of music. Dark lighting and sporadic blasts from the two-tiered venue's smoke machine added to the atmosphere.
Remembering that this was a party, though, the act kept the bulk of tonight's excellent sonic selections on the rock n' roll side of things. Cowbells and strobe lights ushered in the epic "Moon Patrol" with Lee, Hwang, and Kim all sharing vocal duties on the psychedelic-tinged track. Funky, instrumental number "Axe Rose" had attendees grooving and nodding along as they sipped their drinks while the Hwang fronted, Southern rock influenced "Spaceman Blues" was given a well-received injection of blues from Lee's harmonica playing.
A collective cheer erupted from the crowd when the opening notes of "Only You" flowed from DGBD's sound system. Fans eagerly sang along and pumped their fists to the alternative anthem while a handful of extremely excited gents huddled near the base of the stage began head banging. Lee and Hwang rightfully played the role of rock stars as they hoisted their guitars overhead and pulled out several big arena-style poses. After pausing to towel off during a very brief, slightly slower interlude, Lee fell to the ground and started rolling around on stage while banging away on his guitar as the song faded out.
With the audience literally begging for more, Lee stood up and Cocore made their exit. Numerous pleas for an encore went unanswered due to the time restrictions of the event's tight schedule. Despite all of the Club Day-er's leaving the club with massive smiles on their faces, with a full night of live performances ahead more then a few had to be wondering, "How the hell is anything going to top that?"
