Cocore @ Blue Spirit, Seoul (19th Jan. '08)
At The (Co) Core, It's Still Rock N' Roll
When there's already a long line of people waiting outside a small club on a cold January night 30 minutes before the doors open, it's a definite telltale sign that something good is going down inside.
Normally a posh dance club specializing in house music, tonight Blue Spirit was hosting a concert by two of the pioneers in Seoul's indie rock scene - Cocore and Huckleberry Fin. Those still shivering from their extended wait to get in where quickly warmed up by the surrounding bodies packed tightly against them on the sunken dance floor around the stage.
Despite there being little room to move, let alone dance, the determined crowd somehow found space to groove along with Cocore's brand of alt-rock when the quartet emerged shortly past 10:30 p.m. Appearing as shadows under a haze of smoke and flashing lights, they were a beacon of cool as they kicked into the epic "Moon Patrol" from 2006's Fire, Dance With Me. Featuring elements of Brit-pop, rock, and psychedelic music, the track provided a solid introduction to the fantastic hodgepodge of genres that were to be showcased during their 65-minute set.
The band's tight musical skills were displayed early on as guitarists Woo-sung Lee and Myung-soo Hwang traded off vocal duties. Sounding like a live jukebox at times, the night's 10 songs jumped from shoegaze-inspired walls of sound to ballads and even to country music at one point. Despite the wide range of sonic variety, all managed to retain small elements of the early-90s alternative edge that Cocore are known for. Not content to only play guitar, Lee also played harmonica for one song while Hwang added more of an experimental element to the proceeds by playing a flute on a few numbers.
Wanting to remind the highly appreciative audience of what Cocore are all about, Lee chugged a bottle of beer and screamed "Rock n' roll!" Ending their set with the Beck-ish "Move Your Ass," the whole club eagerly did just that as he repeated the title throughout the chorus. The funky cut allowed bassist Jae-gwon Kim and drummer Jung Ji-wan to shine and left many of the dancing bodies in desperate need of refreshment as temperatures soared inside the already humid basement performance area.
Wanting more, attendees instantly began chanting "encore" (which in Korea sounds more like "ancore") as soon as Cocore left the stage. Re-emerging a few moments later, Lee thanked everyone before launching into "Only U," which sent the already excited crowd into near hysterics as they wildly jumped around and screamed along to his lyrics. As the song finished a second chant of "encore" echoed through the room. Already over their allotted time limit, the act simply smiled and waved before making their exit.
