Oh! Brothers & Cabinet Singalongs @ Velvet Banana Club, Seoul (22nd Dec. '07)
Shirt N' Tie Affair
Self-dubbed the "most stylish indie label," Seoul's Oh! Brothers and Cabinet Singalongs were definitely well-dressed for their appearances at Cavare Sound's annual Christmas bash. Titled "Adult Santa & Sexy Rudolf," label founder Sung Moon Lee got the end-of-year party started off on a high note with an opening set from his own act, Oh! Brothers.
Taking the stage shortly after 6 p.m., the quintet looked quite dapper in their matching suits and bowties. Vocalist Sung Soo Choi gave a nod to the festive atmosphere by adding a snowflake ornament to the lapel of his jacket. Wasting little time, he led the band into a cover of "Twist And Shout" as the quickly growing Korean audience sang and danced along. Bassist Lee and guitarist Jung Woong Kim looked especially cool as they huddled close together to share a mic while providing back-up vocals on the classic track.
The gents were all smiles as they mixed elements of vintage rock n' roll with surf and mod sounds during their extremely fun half-hour showcase. Choi danced along to the upbeat rhythms while Kim and saxophonist Sung Bae Lee (who is the younger brother of bassist Sung Moon Lee) leaned into the crowd and waved their instruments over the heads of the responsive fans huddled up front. The elder Lee handled the bulk of the between song banter. He joked early on about the lack of girls near the stage, but later used the short breaks to thank everyone for supporting Cavare over its decade long existence.
Playing cuts from their fourth full-length, this summer's "How Much Gettin` Very Hot?," the act were definitely in top form. Anchored by the talented drumming of Tae Joon Ahn, they had little difficulty keeping the crowd grooving along to their infectious tunes throughout their performance.
After a very short change over, it was Cabinet Singalongs' turn to entertain. An interesting combo, the Seoul quartet are comprised of an acoustic guitarist, an accordion player, a stand-up bassist, and a trombonist who also occasionally played ukulele. The three male members were all dressed in baggy suits, while the female accordion player wore a dress for the occasion. Turning out laidback selections from last year's "Little Fanfare," the group's jazzy folk wasn't met with many sing-a-longs, but did incite several clap-a-longs. A nice change of pace from the rock stylings of their predecessors, their 30-minute concert showcased the diversity of Cavare Sound's roster of underground innovators.
An all-night affair, "Adult Santa & Sexy Rudolf" also featured a half-dozen more acts along with a slew of guest DJs. All went over well with the crowd of Christmas revelers as the Cavare Sound crew did their best to ensure that everyone was primed up for a merry holiday season.
