The Pipettes @ Harajuku Astro Hall (9th Aug. '07)
Girls Just Want To Have Fun
The Pipettes decided to combat jet lag and get primed up for their Summer Sonic performances in Tokyo and Osaka this weekend at the same time by playing an intimate gig at Harajuku Astro Hall. With a solid buzz circulating about the ladies since they wowed audiences at this year's SXSW, a packed house of sweaty hipsters eagerly anticipated their arrival inside the sweltering venue.
Despite the heat, the energetic crowd roared their approval as the four gents who comprise the gals' backing band, The Cassettes, emerged in matching sweater vests and began playing the opening notes of "You Won't Forget Me." The three Pipettes, Becki, Rose, and Gwenno, soon followed and instantly won everyone over with their 60s doo-wop-inspired brand of indie pop.
Although their debut long player, last year's highly praised We Are the Pipettes, won't be given a proper domestic release until the fall, that didn't stop many from singing along to all of it's catchy cuts. It was easy to see why. Clad in white with black polka dot clothing, the UK act's cute choreographies and sweet, simple singing style are a perfect fit for Japan's "kawaii"-obsessed masses.
Becki's inquiry of "Who's up for dancing tonight?" was met with a deafening Beatlemania-esque scream as bodies began grooving to "Your Kisses Are Wasted On Me." Showing that they aren't simply one-trick ponies, Rose and Gwenno each tried their hand at keyboards on several of the band's two-minute pop gems. Working in new songs along with crowd favourites such as "Judy" and "Pull Shapes" the three lasses seemed to be having as much fun during their fantastic 50-minute performance as the fans smiling gleefully below.
Wrapping things up at 8:00 p.m., the group were quickly brought back out for a two-song encore. "ABC" and "We Are The Pipettes" both went over smashingly, leaving the audience literally begging for more as The Pipettes made their final exit.
