"One big man with a big connection takes the whole damn ship in the wrong direction." While this prophetic 1990 Church song holds true on many current unsavory geopolitical fronts, it is the exact opposite that this captain, Justin Mauriello (vocals, guitar), is doing alongside his shipmates Jeremy Berghorst (guitar), Scott Hayden (bass, vocals) and Mike Lund (drums).
Post his days on board the S.S. Zebrahead which first landed in Japanese waters in 2000, Mauriello's new ship, the S.S. I Hate Kate, thoroughly embraces the Seas of Japan. Launching on the pulsing, skipping, buoy-to- buoy race of "Bed Of Black Roses" into the buttoning, neurotic bounce bloom of "Then You Kiss" that has this internal sea awash in its crew fisting in agreement to the four officer topside. Amid their duties to each other and crew, Hayden, Berghost, Lund and Mauriello rightly navigate these waters into the 1-2 screeching, bounce of "Inside Inside."
Boasting a vintage secret weapon from the early 'I want my MTV!' days, IHK fly their Peter Schilling-crafted "Major Tom" sail that would make its German's papa proud as all "4-3-2-1" alongside Mauriello. As always, this leader of men commands his ship exceptionally as the crew follow his lead beautifully to Hayden's bouncing bass in "I'm In Love With A Sociopath" into the walking swish-swash skip of "The Thrill."
Communicating with his officers to the crew below that all is good, the soaring "Embrace The Curse" rumbles in its pulsing clip of acceptance to the silver lining for its shinning redemption that solidifies in the stitching, soul-bearing steady walk of trust "It's You" that fully finds strong winds. The pummeling, skipping chorus of "Outta My Head" sails awash Lund's high-hat, Berghost's drills and Hayden's threading bass. The first voyage closes on the 1-2 deliciously layered repeater in descent and ascension of "A Story I Can't Write." "Bullshit!" as the Captain Mauriello would say as he simply can.
Slipping back out to sea again, the S.S. I Hate Kate smoothly delivers the mesmerizing, building, emboldening call to stand strong with "Love Association" that has all ready for any adversary. Ensuring their crew is not stuck in an emotional hypnosis, officers Lund, Berghost and Hayden alongside Captain Mauriello lead this vessel into the horizon awash the absolute freedom of "Always Something" as Vans fly about the deck, crew happily cutting loose as all on the bridge proudly smile to one another. Yeah, the famed 70's-80's US television program 'Love Boat' sank long ago, but this one is just beginning its run.
