Metalchicks @ Shibuya O-Nest (16th Jun. '07)
For Those About To Rock
Mix equal parts old school metal and pulsating dance music together. What do you get? A way too much fun sound that makes you want to pump your fist and shake your ass at the same time courtesy of extremely talented Tokyo duo, Metalchicks.
Comprised of Buffalo Daughter's suGar Yoshinaga on guitar and sequencer and Yuka Yoshimura on drums, Metalchicks took to the stage shortly before 10 p.m. Dressed in a collared shirt, tie, and short skirt, Yoshinaga looked like the Japanese female equivalent of Angus Young as she tore through the night's opening number.
Starting out as more a rock-oriented concert, Metalchicks' fondness for electronica became more prevalent with each passing number. It was cool to see the attitude of the near capacity crowd and subsequently the general vibe inside the popular live house slowly change in response to the shift in the act's music. The bulk of the appreciative audience may have been simply nodding along to the infectious rhythms at the beginning, but by the time "We Are The Warriors" from last summer's fantastic St. Wonder blasted through the speakers about 40 minutes later the room had morphed into a gigantic dance party.
Since forming in 2000, Yoshinaga and Yoshimura's unique stylings have allowed them to emerge as one of the more exciting acts in Tokyo's prolific underground scene. Complimenting each other well, the two highly skilled players are both quiet and reserved between songs, but can rock out with the best of them when the time comes to play. Brimming with creativity, a slight Latin groove was incorporated into one of their songs causing the ladies to joke afterwards about whether they were playing Latin Metal or Flamenco Metal. Regardless of how they choose to label it, the powerful track was nothing short of fantastic.
Despite the heavy aspect of their mainly instrumental (Yoshinaga occasionally sings on her own and through a vocoder) sonic bursts the group had little trouble enthralling the DJ-loving, Sunday night/ early Monday morning revelers crowded into the Red Marquee at last year's Fuji Rock Festival. Scheduled to perform at the 2007 edition of Rising Sun Rock Festival this August in Ezo, you can bet they'll instantly win over the riled up festival crowd.
Highly recommend for anyone who likes metal, chicks, or just good old fashioned quality music.
