Calexico w/ Iron & Wine @ Shibuya Club Quattro (27nd Jan '07)
Hot In Herre
Calexico brought some of the scorching Arizona heat with them to Shibuya as they turned a nearly sold-out Club Quattro into a sauna during their fantastic set.
Things began to warm up, literally, as soon as opener Iron & Wine began playing. Joined by his sister Sarah Beam, hirsute indie folk rocker Sam Beam instantly charmed attendees with spell-binding musical selections such as "Sodom, South Georgia" from 2004's Our Endless Numbered Days.
The mainly acoustic set was simply stunning. The mixed, older crowd stared on in complete awe as the Beam siblings' beautiful voices perfectly meshed together. Not wanting to miss out on a good thing, Calexico's Paul Niehaus joined in on steel guitar for a bit and Joey Burns accompanied the duo later as well. The soft-spoken Sam Beam said little between songs, but the Florida-based musician did comment on Shibuya saying, "I've never seen so many people in one place." He ended his 30 minute concert with "Trapeze Swinger." The awesome song was met with a huge applause from the audience as the Beams made their exit.

Calexico really got things cooking with their excellent hybrid of modern and traditional sounds from the southern U.S. and Mexico. Their performance started off slowly with only Burns, Niehaus, and drummer John Convertino playing. They were soon joined by the other three members of the sextet as they kicked into a round of rootsy, soulful rock. Multi-instrumentalist Jacob Valenzuela picked up his trumpet adding another dimension to the act's dynamic music.
Displaying remarkable skill and showmanship, the Tucson, Arizona band's performance had enough diversity to satisfy the palette of any discerning music lover. There was the above mentioned rock and Latin rhythms, there was a bit of folk at different points, and there was even a short jazzy interlude that got the energetic crowd cheering loudly. Surrounded by instruments, Valenzuela and the band's other multi-instrumentalist, Martin Wenk, were like kids at the park as they continually switched musical tools in order to recreate cuts from last year's Garden Ruin along with other tracks from throughout Calexico's decade long existence. Burns paused half-way through the show to comment about the heat inside the venue. He wasn't exaggerating. The combination of a whole lot of swaying bodies packed into Quattro and all the excellent music sent the temperature soaring.
Sam and Sarah Beam made their way out after about an hour to accompany Calexico for some songs. Most notable were the gorgeous version of "He Lays In The Reins" from 2005's joint Iron & Wine/Calexico EP, "In The Reins," and a cover of The Rolling Stones' "Wild Horses," which fit perfectly with the vibe established by both acts. The collaboration was a fitting finale, capping off a brilliant display of music that many in attendance wished could have lasted for hours longer.
