Deerhoof @ Shinjuku Loft (20th Jan.'07)
You Can Always Come Back Home
In a recent interview with online music magazine Pitchfork, Deerhoof drummer Greg Saunier praised Shinjuku Loft as being the best music venue in the world. He said, "(It's) not much bigger than my living room, but (has) enough PA power to fill up a football stadium."
Like any good house show, Deerhoof's gig at Loft was absolutely rammed, making it nearly impossible to see all three members for many at the sold-out gig. Luckily, few seemed to mind as what was lost in vision was made up for with plenty of noisy, poppy ear candy.
With Tokyo-born bassist and singer Satomi Matsuzaki leading the way, the San Francisco trio showcased cuts from their recently released eighth full-length, Friend Opportunity. Despite her fellow Tokyoites cheering wildly to welcome her back home, Matsuzaki left between song banter up to Saunier. With no mic set up behind his drum kit, he ran to center stage each time he wanted to talk. His efforts to speak as much Japanese as possible and even crack a few jokes during each short speech was eagerly applauded by the mixed crowd of indie rock lovers who looked to be mainly in their 20s.
Saunier and Matsuzaki attracted the lion's share of the attention on the stripped down stage. Crouched down behind his drum kit, the energetic Saunier provided plenty of awesome beats for Deerhoof's art rock. Dwarfed by her bass (it was almost as big as she was), the petite Matsuzaki's expressive, childlike vocals and slow, deliberate stage moves and hand gestures caused local and foreign female fans to scream out "Kawaii!" several times throughout the performance.
Despite slimming down to a trio after last year's departure of guitarist Chris Cohen, who had been playing with Deerhoof since 2002, Deerhoof are still as strong as ever. Working their way through an array of fantastic music from throughout their 13 year career it became obvious to see why so many have fallen in love with the band's unique pop stylings and why their underground cult following continues to grow with each passing year.
