Mo'some Tonebender @ Shibuya AX (2nd Dec '06)
Mo' Mo' Mo' Mo'some
Looking to kick off this holiday season in style, the three lads in Mo'some Tonebender had their amps and mic stands decked out in Christmas lights and tinsel as they began their nearly two hour set at Shibuya AX. Loving the festive mood, the near capacity crowd showered the act with mass adoration from the very start.
Singer and guitarist Kazuhiro Momo, bassist Yasunori Takei, and drummer Isamu Fujita did their best to play the part of cool rock n' rollers during their hard-hitting performance. With all three dressed almost completely in black (Momo wore a white collared shirt), the first half of their concert saw them focusing simply on their music as they stood still under basic white spotlights. Showcasing fantastic musicianship, they thundered through great tracks such as "You Are Rock'n Roll" from this year's CD single of the same name and "Green & Gold" from 2004's Stories Of Adventure.
As things progressed, the vibe on stage became a lot looser without sacrificing any of the intensity of Mo'some's mix of rock, alternative, and punk. Flipping his bass over his shoulder, Takei began to show off his first rate dancing skills. Swinging his bass back around, he hung a strand of tinsel from the head of his instrument before re-joining Momo and Fujita. With the audience screaming in delight, Momo began to walk around the stage, shaking his soaked hair as he turned out a blistering array of guitar noise.
Having given their all, the band left the stage at 8:40 p.m., but the crowd wanted some mo' of Mo'some Tonebender. Amidst a flurry of spinning, multi-colour lights, a heavy dance beat erupted from AX's massive sound system as the band returned. A two-stepping Takei took over vocal duties as Momo and Fujita jammed alongside the electronic sounds. With Momo pacing back and forth to play for different areas of the room, Takei picked up a tinsel covered trumpet, helping to take the musical direction of the encore in an even different path. With strobe lights blanketing all of AX and the crowd going absolutely crazy, Takei strapped his bass on one last time as the song faded out.
Leaving in a wave of feedback and distortion, boisterous attendees began wildly screaming for mo', mo', and mo' Mo'some Tonebender. Continuing to clap for several minutes, not even the house lights being turned on could deter the band's dedicated fan base as they continued to beg for another encore until AX staff began asking everyone to leave.
