Bleach with Ni-Hao!, Watusi Zombie @ Yoyogi Zher the Zoo (5th Nov. '06)
Good Things Come In Threes
Forget about duos and large scale ensembles. After witnessing the awesome prowess of three, three piece acts - Osaka's Watusi Zombie, Kyoto's Ni-Hao!, and Okinawa's Bleach I'm convinced that it's all about the trio.
The three Watusi Zombie boys burst onto Zher The Zoo's small stage and instantly got everyone dancing with their infectious garage rock. Guitarists Jugem Tanimura and Anri Yasuzato traded off verses while wildly bouncing around to the tight rock n' roll rhythms from their 2005 debut full-length. The more crazed of the two, Tanimura passionately screamed his lyrics while shaking his sweaty hair, striking poses, and pointing at spectators. Although his vocals were more melodic, Yasuzato showed he possessed the gusto to keep up with his band mate early on by running into the middle of the crowd, playing a few notes, and then literally diving back on stage.
With the whole club loving the raw blend of punk and rock the act decided to crank the energy level even higher. Drummer Miyake Meguru moved his kit to the middle of the dance floor and both guitarists followed his lead, giving excited audience members an even more up close and intimate experience. Completely surrounded by spectators, Tanimura kept moving his microphone stand to different areas of the circle to allow him to sing to different groups while the other members continued to turn out an excellent array of fist pumping sounds.
While Watusi Zombie brought a whole lot of wild rock n' roll energy, Ni-Hao!'s mission was to have as much fun as possible. Dressed in their respective colours of Blue, Red, and Green, Yukari, who some may know from the fantastic Limited Express (Has Gone?), Ariko, and Leo were all laughing as they launched into their first eccentric number. Splitting their short set equally between the more rock oriented numbers from 2005's Gorgeous and the experimental sounds of this year's New-Hao!, they started with Yukari and Ariko both on bass. Half-way through they switched instruments with Yukari handling drumming duties while Leo and Ariko took over keyboards and synthesizer. Regardless of what they were playing, the trio unabashedly danced around and clapped while recreating their brilliant sonic collages.
Chaotic songs such as "Ni-Hao! Makes New Sound," "Smurfy," and "Hysteric Teacher" were all turned into wonderful, jumbled messes of gleeful noise. All three girls sang with their sweet voices, high pitch screams, and giggles adding more layers to their incredibly dense, upbeat tracks. Looking to make the extremely appreciate audience adore them even more, Ni-Hao worked in highly danceable covers of The Jackson 5's "ABC" and The Ramones' "Do You Remember Rock 'N' Roll Radio?" as their show wound down.
Bleach came out and quickly gave proof that you should never judge someone based on appearance alone. Despite being relatively small in size, the three ladies had little difficulty battering eardrums as they closed out the night with an intense set of blistering punk and hardcore. With her microphone purposefully set up super low, guitarist Kanna crouched down while singing. Her vocals were accented throughout the gig by insanely loud screams from bassist Miya. Almost frightening in their intensity, Miya went into convulsions and looked like she was going to swallow her microphone during each hardcore influenced growl. Flashing red and yellow lights added even more fuel to the fiery sonic assault.
Following the excellent pounding rhythms of drummer Sayuri, the act tore through material from their most recent effort and a handful of older cuts. The Japanese crowd nodded their heads in approval and sang along to great tracks such as "Sun-dance (Moon-dance)" from 2003's self-titled album. The last date of a week's worth of Tokyo concerts, Bleach were in top form as they showed off their remarkable talent and musicianship making it evident why they have built up dedicated fan bases both at home and abroad.
