The Zutons @ Shibuya AX (2nd Oct '06)
Glitter And Mop-tops
It may have been a cool, damp night in most of Shibuya, but The Zutons went to great lengths to ensure that AX was scorching hot. Following up their Red Marquee headlining gig at this year's Fuji Rock Festival, the Liverpool, England quintet drew a good-sized crowd to the large venue for a night of good, solid rock n' roll tunes.
The lights dimmed as the band made their way on the stage. Decked out in a glittery, silver dress, saxophonist Abi Harding shone as she walked through the darkness with her four shaggy haired bandmates. Wanting to be able to see their instruments as they created their bright, upbeat songs lead singer David McCabe asked "Can we have some lights please," as the group kicked into opening number. Had he been standing a bit closer to Harding and her luminous outfit perhaps his vision would have been ok.
With Harding's sax giving the act's poppy garage rock a slightly bluesy edge, the band had the young audience of British music lovers gleefully dancing along to selections from both of their discs. Using a stripped down stage set-up and minimal lighting, The Zutons were all in high spirits as they played tracks such as "Havana Gang Brawl" from 2004's Mercury Prize nominated Who Killed...... The Zutons. Harding was kicking up her high heels when not playing as she moved to the catchy sounds. She and bassist Russell Pritchard also provided back up vocals on several cuts.
Speaking of cuts, one remarkable thing about The Zutons was the similar hair styles on each of the guys. All four had hair that fell just past their ears and was a little curly. Thankfully they were all playing different instruments. If not for this, their Beatles-esque mop-tops may have made it difficult to tell them apart.
Drummer Sean Payne asked how many people caught their set at Fuji Rock. A scream echoed though the building at the mere mention of Japan's near-legendary music festival. Payne dedicated "Tired Of Hanging Around," the title track from their most recent recording, to everyone who watched them in July. Many who saw them and some who didn't eagerly bounced around in response to the gesture.
From what I've heard the band had little trouble wowing the crowd in Naeba this past summer. I can safely say that with a repertoire boasting numerous well-written, party-oriented tunes and the ability to play them even better live The Zutons easily achieved this feat again.
