Fangsanalsatan Extra feat. The Stars, Boris, Guitar Wolf @ Shinjuku Loft (22nd July '06)
Give Me Something I Can Dance To!
Fangsanalsatan Extra brought together three of Tokyo's best underground rock units ミ Stars, Boris, and Guitar Wolf for a fantastic show at Loft. Despite their different musical styles, all three performed stellar sets of vintage-inspired goodness that had the near capacity crowd shaking their asses all night long.
Stars started things off with a dark set of psychedelic pop. Opening with "Subway" each of the night's four songs were gradually constructed as guitarists You Ishihara and Michio Kurihara turned out loads of swirling, trippy guitar noise. Eventually morphing into a dirty, dose of bluesy rock n' roll, Stars had everyone packed onto Loft's sunken dance floor grooving along to their cosmic rhythms. Ishihara's deep, Jim Morrison-esque vocals added a dramatic element to the compositions. However, it was the drawn-out instrumental parts of each track that truly allowed the group to shine. Equal parts shoegaze and heavy rock, these sonic excursions were overflowing with feedback-laden musical goodness that had attendees cheering in appreciation.

Smoke filled the room as the lights dimmed for Boris' set. The screen that covers Loft's small stage was slowly raised to reveal the three outlines of the group's members. Barely visible through the haze, drummer Atsuo began banging on a large gong that was placed behind his kit. Slow, menacing, and insanely heavy, Boris set out to obliterate the eardrums of those huddled up front with their Sabbath-influenced sludge metal. Not content to simply blow people away with intense blasts of noise, Boris' next number was a highly danceable, distorted piece of stoner rock that had fans headbanging and swaying back and forth.
Bassist/guitarist Takeshi and Atsuo handled vocal duties while the cool and collected Wata kept to herself as she turned out her fantastic guitar riffs. Their raucous hour-long performance combined the best facets of the last 40 years of hard rock into one deadly (and totally awesome) punch. There were elements of both sludge and speed metal, garage rock, psychedelic rock, and noise rock all presented with a punk rock aesthetic. Heck, there was even a bit of arena rock posturing mixed in as Atsuo stood up several times, pointed his drum sticks at the audience and screamed "yeah."
Bringing things full circle, the smoke machine began spewing out ghostly clouds as Boris kicked into another round of slow-moving, murky music. Densely packed with heavily distorted noise, feedback, and a little more of the gong, the crushing number eventually gave way to one last upbeat jam.
With spectators' ears ringing from Boris, it took a few moments for the crowd to recognize the squeal of tires and the sound of motorcycles revving that was played over the sound system prior to Guitar Wolf making their entrance. Beacons of cool, the three members casually sauntered out of the darkness clad in their trademark leather pants, jackets and sunglasses as the crowd raised their fingers in the metal salute.

From there the chaotic rock n' roll spectacle that is Guitar Wolf began. The consummate showman, frontman Seiji slammed a can of beer in one gulp before climbing atop of the club's speakers and coaxing the crowd to cheer louder. Launching into their first piece of fast-paced garage rock, the venue erupted in a sea of sweaty, bouncing bodies who wildly danced to every note the trio unleashed. A one man rock n' roll machine, Seiji struck poses, mugged for attendees, and dove into the audience while his bandmates played on.
Tearing through their raw punk tunes at warp speed, the crowd went absolutely crazy for every new song and eagerly ate up all the band's antics. Diving into the audience again, Seiji emerged with a 20-something year old male that he pulled up on stage with him. Handing the fan his guitar, the man started playing along with bassist UG and drummer Toru as Seiji hoisted his mic stand to the ceiling and began grooving along to the wonderful racket like everyone else in Loft. Loud, messy, and so much fun, Guitar Wolf's debauchery-filled set easily wore down what little sole was left on the crowds' dancing shoes.
