Zoobombcrazy

The Zoobombs
You just can't hold a good band down.

Even though they played without drummer Pocky, who was stuck in Hokkaido, the Zoobombs wowed the Japanese fans crowded into the intimate Zher The Zoo. Originally billed as a Don Matsuo solo gig, the event was turned into a full-band show to get the three in town members primed for their upcoming Australian dates.

In the midst of their soundcheck the lights suddenly dimmed and on cue the group kicked into the night's opening number. Playing with a substitute drummer and a second guitarist, both of whom were borrowed from different opening acts, the Tokyo-based act decided against doing a traditional set. Instead, they let loose a series of extended jam-sessions that exhibited their remarkable rock n' roll prowess.

Wearing a Rolling Stones pin on his jacket, frontman Matsuo and his bandmates paid homage to their heroes as they started things off with a wave of soulful, bluesy rock. Playing the role of conductor, he occasionally directed the two make-shift members as the organic sounds being turned out bloomed. Keyboardist Matta switched to bongos for a few minutes while Matsuo handled the keyboards giving the music a more experimental feel

As their 40-minute performance progressed, Zoobombs slowly constructed numerous sonic backdrops and then quickly tore them down before taking things in a completely different direction. Despite the loose nature of the band on stage, the performance was remarkably tight with everyone following Matsuo's lead. It was hard to believe this was the first time Matsuo, Matta, and bassist Moostop had performed with the two other musicians.

Matuso did his best to get the already excited crowd even more wound up as each jam reached its rousing climax. Placing his mic stand at the edge of the stage, he leaned into the crowd as he sang causing the wildly dancing audience to scream their approval. With the infectious grooves being produced by the group increasing in intensity it was damn near impossible not to be swept away by the raw, passionate rock n' roll spirit that engulfed every inch of the basement club.

With things starting to unwind on their own, the group geared up for a big finish. Matuso fell to his knees as the music quickly picked up speed, then stood up and hoisted his guitar to the ceiling as Zoobombs' awesome sonic journey faded out and everyone came forward to take a bow.

Zoobombs will be playing the follow-up to April's successful "Zoo Festa" concert at Shibuya O-Nest at the end of May. Dubbed "Zoo Festa 2", the show will take place on May 31. Look for the group to be playing throughout Japan in June and early July as well during their "Let's Go Holiday Tour 2006." Check them out if you can. They'll make you go Zoobombcrazy!
