ツアー最終地となったのはアクースティックな音楽好きにしてみれば、おそらく、あこがれのような楽器店、サンタモニカのマッケイブス・ギター・ショップ。なにせ、ドアを開けると壁中に飾られているのがとんでもない数の弦楽器。ギターからマンドリン、バンジョーといったアメリカ音楽にはなくてはならないものから、オートハープにブズーキ、あるいは、名前もわからないハープのようなギターやらなんやら... さすがに、それだけでも嬉しくなってしまうのだ。
2階には楽器のレッスンをするスペースもあり、ここになじみのある伝説的なミュージシャン達の写真も数多く飾られている。そのなかにはブルーグラス界のドン、ビル・モンローからブルース界の巨人、ミシシッピー・ジョン・ハートやエリザベス・コットンといった顔が見える。あるいは、ライ・クーダーからデヴィッド・リンドレーといったルーツ・ミュージック界の辣腕ミュージシャンたちもいる。しかも、聞くところによるとビル・モンローでさえ、ここで演奏した時にはオーディエンスと一緒に話をしたりと、本当の音楽好きが交流する場として知られているとのことだ。そんな背景もあるんだろうし、また、アメリカン・ミュージックと日本の間で仕事を続けている、今回のツアーのプロデューサー、麻田浩氏の人脈もあるんだろう。アメリカという、一世を風靡したバンドのジェリー・ベックリーが来ていたらしいし、昨年の12月に来日したモダン・フォーク・カルテットのヘンリー・ディルツも遊びに来ていた。あと、名前は確認していないんだが、ボブ・ディランのツアー・マネージャーをしていた人物とか... おそらく、他にもいろいろいたんだろう。 |

この日は根っからのブルーグラス・ファンでフラット・マンドリンの奏者でもある国本氏が、フォークやカントリーのミュージシャンでもある麻田氏と一緒に店中の楽器をチェック。実際に演奏してみながら、あれはいい、これはいいと、なにか落ち着かない様子。また、ボトルネックを使って三味線を演奏している彼に影響を受けたのか、大野氏もひとつ、ボトルネックを買っていた。そして、楽屋で試し引きをしながら、「これ、面白い」と大騒ぎとなるのだ。 「いやぁ、いろいろ試したんだよね、三味線で。エフェクター使ってジミヘンみたいに演奏してみたり... っても、ああゆうのを使ったら、結局、三味線じゃなくなるから、やめちゃいましたけど。だって、意味ないですから」 と、そんな話をしてくれたのが国本氏。楽器には独自の音色があり、それを失ってしまっては意味がない。また、そういった人間の肌触りを直接伝えてくれるのが、生身で演奏される音楽の素晴らしさ。そんなことを再認識させてくれたのが今回のツアーだった。 なんでもエジプトが起源でペルシャから中国を経由して、沖縄に伝わり、本土に流れ込んだのが三味線らしい。それに費やされた時間は数百年なんだが、そうやって世界を半周して伝わった楽器が奏でる音楽は言葉を遙かに越えてあらゆる人たちに鳴り響いていく。どの会場でもそれを感じることができたのが、このツアーの成果だったように思える。 comment and photos by hanasan |
