Royksopp @ Shibuya AX (1st Feb '06)
Continuing To Give Their Nordic Good Frequencies
"Surfing on a rocket...Surfing on a rocket...Surfing on a rocket," the cascading, soothing coalescence of cool from esteemed French peers AIR is just one way in describing the fine flying dynamics of Norwegian duo Royksopp and their flight chartered this night. Blending their minimal, yet richly layered tapestries nestled throughout 2001's debut Melody A.M. and the next step within 2005's The Understanding, Svein Berge and Torbjorn Brundtland deliciously dispense their treats.
"Royksopp's Night Out" begins this evening in earnest with its calming, yet slightly chaotic construction, capturing all across the floor in a strengthening hypnosis. While the haunting beauty pumps throughout "What Else Is There," bringing another walking dimension of utter relaxation, soon shattering into the building, frantic bouncing, tightly bundled joy of "Circuit Breaker," Royksopp's signature sound of calm assurance "Eple" blends into the spacey, late 70's Giorgio Moroderesque crescendo paranoia of "Alpha Male." The monstrously building house hit of "Poor Leno" closes the initial set amidst its pulsing skipping beat to the happy feet on the floor moving as all inhibitions are lost.
For the finale, like any good trip, Svein and Torbjorn bring it back to where their endless global flights started. Delving out the track that immortalized them in Fuji Rock history within their inaugural early morning set, they let loose in Melody's tick-tock minimal groove masterpiece "So Easy." In synch with this happy house all night with this cherry on top coming, it's clear that Svein and Torbjorn have a commanding understanding, evident in the wide smiles and unprecedented Tokyoite callings for more. Just as promised in the orchestral shimmering of "Dead To The World," they have come back for us, here to stay.
