Clap Your Hands Say Yeah @ Shibuya Club Quattro (24th Jan '06)
Making Heads Turn, Ears Perk And Feet Happy With Ease
"I got this easy, peaceful feeling," an Eagles classic that could quite surprisingly best describe the sweet conveyance of a night shared with the emerging power of the New York/Philadelphia quintet Clap Your Hands Say Yeah. Coalescing influences of the late 70's and early 80's art-school establishment with their own stripped down, yet rich yearnings, Alec Ounsworth (guitar/vocals), Sean Greenhalgh (drums/percussion), Tyler Sargent (bass/backing vocals), Lee Sargent (guitar/keyboards/backing vocals) and Robbie Guertin (guitar/keyboard/backing vocals) dispense their own quirky rebirth of cool to a boisterous receptive house of Tokyoites in the know.
Initially taken aback by the oversold status of their gig and a subsequent burgeoning warmth inside fanned by proud New Yorkers peppered throughout, CYHSH take to the stage with an wondrous child-like pleasure evident on all faces, smiles wide. The steady, layered jaunt "Let The Cool Goddess Rust Away" immediately swallows all whole in its building, hypnotic hold punctuated by Ounsworth's sincere callings over its melodic dissonance that cleanly segues into the meandering shining reflective exploration of "Over And Over Again (Lost And Found)." The skipping, nonsensical happy twang of "The Skin Of My Yellow Country Teeth" keeps matters building inside perfectly, blending cascading old school keys, jangling guitars punctuated by bents amidst a looping, threading bass and timely fills by Greenhaugh to an immense joy throughout inside. Although the swirling, sweet questioning confection that "Is This Love?" comes later in the set, love is undoubtedly omnipresent this night from start to finish as no fear can be felt, just a sweet joy of absolute certainty. The racing frantic rambler "Upon This Tidal Wave Of Young Blood" closes the main set awash in a sea of swaying heads and a communally shared liberation to the widening smiles of this collective far from home.
The step right up pump organ carnival fun "Clap Your Hands!" gives way for a finale that seals the deal for all as the fuzz-filled sonic cocktail "Heavy Metal" closes this first chapter of CYHSY glory within Japan awash in its rousing full resonant finish. With impressive inclusions to SXSW and Coachella this year, a return for Japan for a coveted spot at this summer's Fuji Rock would be a good bet for these five. Clap your hands say yeah! |
