Tristan Prettyman with Will Conner @ Shibuya Club Quatro (22nd Jan '06)
All That And Looks Too

Some people get all the luck. Take Tristan Prettyman for instance. She's young, talented, and her career is really starting to take off. On top of all of that, she's got good looks on her side as well. The San Diego-based singer-songwriter used to model for Quicksilver before deciding to try her hand at music. Both her musical skills and beauty were on display during tonight's show at Shibuya Club Quattro, the first of five gigs she's playing in Japan.
The club was packed when Prettyman emerged onstage at 7:45 pm. With Japan being her largest market (she's sold almost three times as many CDs here as she has in the States), the large crowd came as little surprise to everyone except Prettyman. She seemed genuinely taken aback that people were so interested in her music and thanked the crowd several times for their support.
She quickly showed that the attention bestowed upon her is well justified. Starting things off with a solo performance of "Melting", she made the spacious live house feel like an intimate coffeehouse. Pausing to explain what many of the night's songs were about, performing without shoes on, and drinking out of what appeared to be a large paper coffee cup added to the vibe. The soft lighting and an older, well dressed audience who were quiet and attentive while Prettyman played didn't hurt either.
Her recently recruited live band joined her for "Always Feel This Way." She informed the crowd later that tonight marked their first night as a group. Feeding off of each other wonderfully, if she hadn't of divulged this tidbit, few would have known. Comprised of guitarist and banjo player Jesse Harris, who played and wrote on Norah Jones' Come Away With Me, and percussionist Jennifer Lowe, her backing band's lovely, subdued instrumentation helped fill out Prettyman's acoustic tales and gave them a much warmer feel on this cold January night.
Her 20 song set featured all of 2003's The Love EP and 11 cuts from her major label debut, last year's Twentythree. The night's most popular track was Twentythree's first single, "Love Love Love." A huge cheer erupted from the appreciative audience as Prettyman began strumming the opening chords of the song. They proceeded to sing and clap along while Prettyman and co. played the catchy number.
The appeal of Prettyman's music is its simplicity. There is nothing overly complicated or technical about her songs. They are simply well-crafted, folk-pop. Wearing her heart on her sleeve, her lyrics read like diary entries allowing listeners to share a personal connection with her honest tales of love and life.
Although she performed for over 90 minutes, the lengthy concert didn't feel long. For a relatively new artist, Prettyman has remarkable stage presence. Few young musicians could captivate several hundred people for that amount of time with only material from one full-length and an EP to carry them. .
Ending with "Please," she soon emerged back on stage for a two-song encore which included a cover of Oasis' "Live Forever." Accompanied by Lowe, her stripped down rendition of the track was fantastic. Slow and soulful, her breathy vocals and sincere, heartfelt delivery made the song feel like it was hers. Having only begun to develop her skill, Prettyman will definitely be a name to watch for in the years to come. .
