Kaiser Chiefs @ Liquidroom Ebisu (23rd Jan '06)
Every Girl's Crazy About A Sharp Dressed Man
Dire Straits' "Money For Nothing" blasted out of the speakers as the lights dimmed and Leeds, England's Kaiser Chiefs emerged onstage. Looking rather dapper in collared shirts and ties, perhaps ZZ Top's "Sharp Dressed Man" would have been better suited to introduce the quintet.
Their choice of clothing definitely suited the band because as soon as they launched into their first song things were all business. Drummer Nick Hodgson sat down behind his kit and screamed "1, 2, 3, 4" as frontman Ricky Wilson lunged for his mic and shouted "Na Na Na Na Naa," to usher in the track. On cue, the large number of Japanese fans and British expats crowded near the stage began jumping and dancing wildly. Not to be outdone, Wilson did a whole lot of two-stepping of his own to the infectious amalgamation of mod and new wave sounds.
The charismatic Wilson was constantly on the move, stopping for no more than a few seconds at a time during the band's energetic 50-minute performance. He bopped, bounced, ran along the monitors before jumping off, played tambourine, swung his mic in the air, and leaned into the audience while singing. His bandmates were no slouches either, turning out fantastic, tight renditions of cuts from their debut full-length, 2005's Employment. The near capacity crowd was immensely appreciative, loudly applauding all of the group's antics and singing along to every one of the night's musical selections.

As was witnessed during last year's appearances at Fuji Rock and Live 8, Kaiser Chiefs definitely know how to work a crowd. Wilson asked "Everybody ready?" as the rest of the group began playing "Everyday I Love You Less and Less." Suddenly the lights on stage went out and everyone in the band froze in whatever pose they were in at the time. Another call of "1, 2, 3, 4" from Hodgson brought the lights back on as the band kicked things into high gear and the floor erupted into action.
Between songs Wilson cracked jokes with attendees and the rest of the group took turns trying out the Japanese phrases they knew. Clearly enjoying their second trip to Japan, all five members wore big smiles on their faces while bashing out their fun, highly danceable anthems. As "I Predict A Riot" started Wilson hopped up on the drum riser to play cymbals. He repeatedly twirled his drum sticks and threw them up in the air before catching them as he helped bash out the opening to the track. To its credit, the awesome song served its name well as a near mini riot broke out in the Liquid Room with the whole club jumping in unison while several crowd surfers climbed atop of the sweaty masses.
Kaiser Chiefs ended their explosive performance with "Oh My God." As the song wound down, Wilson held his mic over the crowd, encouraging them to sing along to the chorus. They gladly obliged, but their efforts weren't good enough for the tireless vocalist who repeatedly pushed them harder by yelling "louder" after each attempt. With almost the entire venue pumping their fists and screaming the lyrics he swung his mic around a few last times and then raised his beer in salute before walking off stage.
