Bloodthirsty Butchers with +/- {Plus/Minus} @ Shibuya AX (4th Dec. '05)
Brothers In Arms
Japan's Bloodthirsty Butchers and America's +/- are tight. The two acts have toured together several times, becoming friends and gaining enormous respect for one another in the process. This past spring saw the release of the album Bloodthirsty Butchers Vs + / -. The split EP featured both of the groups covering each other's work.
Tonight's show at Shibuya AX was the last date of +/-'s Asian tour. The trek saw the New York quartet playing shows throughout Taiwan and Japan with the Butchers. The band was initially set to wrap things up with a show in Hong Kong, but unfortunately the gig was cancelled due to personal reasons. On the plus side (there were no minuses), they went all out for their AX appearance, creating an awesome showcase of music for the near capacity crowd.
Touring in support of their most recent effort, Let's Build A Fire, +/- thrilled the appreciated audience with their wonderful blend of rock and indie pop. Guitarists James Baluyut and Patrick Ramos took turns handling vocal duties, their melodic singing contrasting wonderfully with the brilliant angular sounds being crafted by their bandmates. A keyboard was set up in the middle of the stage with the two singers and the band's touring bassist all taking turns playing it.
Part-way through the set the group were joined by three members of Bloodthirsty Butchers. The mere mention of the Japanese band's name sent attendees into hysterics. The two groups worked together perfectly to perform an awesome version of the Butchers' "Banging The Drum". Guitarist Hisako Tabuchi came out towards the end of the track to sing with Baluyut and Ramos. +/- wrapped things up with "The Queen Of Detroit" before thanking everyone in Japanese and making their exit.
Twenty minutes later Butchers' drummer Masahiro Komatsu and +/- drummer Chris Deaner walked out and sat behind the two drum kits stationed at the rear of the stage. They tapped one another's sticks and then started banging away in sync. The audience roared their approval as the two showed off their skills. A few minutes later the rest of Bloodthirsty Butchers emerged. Guitarist Hideki Yoshimura raised his instrument over his head and the drumming stopped while the rest of the band started the first song.
Anchored by the powerful drumming of Komatsu and Deaner, the Butchers floored the cheering crowd with their opening number. Deaner departed prior to the second track, leaving the band to work their charms alone. Performing under dramatic lighting, the act turned in a tight 50 minute set that featured aspects of indie rock, pop, punk, and shoegaze. Tabuchi was the most animated of the quartet. Breaking out as many big-time rock n' roll poses as possible, her exaggerated moves added an extra level of entertainment to the concert.
Deaner made one last appearance during the band's closing number. Having an extra percussionist once more increased the potency of the Butchers' sound. The two drummers kept their eyes glued to each other's kit. With big smiles on their faces they mirrored one another's actions, perfectly matching each note being turned out.
Without a doubt the highlight of both shows were the stellar collaborations between the bands. With so much respect for one another, thankfully it'll be only a matter of time before we see the two acts coming together again.
