Majestic Doves Battle Evil Spirits In Tokyo
October 30 is commonly referred to as Devil's Night due to the wave of mischief often caused on the eve before Halloween. As witches, ghosts, and goblins began to infiltrate the shops, restaurants, and bars of Tokyo, Manchester's Doves attempted to protect the city with their epic, soaring melodies.
Sauntering out of the darkness at quarter after seven, the quartet (the core trio of Jimi Goodwin, Jez Williams, and Andy Williams along with touring keyboardist Martin Rebelski) instantly raised the spirits of the several hundred British expats and Japanese Britpop lovers in attendance. Opening with "Snowden" from their most recent effort, Some Cities, the band filled the spacious venue with their moving mix of pop and shoegaze sounds. Excellent versions of "Sky Starts Falling" and Last Broadcast's "Where We're Calling From" and "Pounding" followed, each doing an admirable job of increasing the intensity level amongst the receptive crowd. "Pounding" was especially good, establishing itself as one of the show's highlights early on. Anchored by the powerful drumming of Williams, the group built up a majestic wall of sound that would have easily destroyed any evil spirits lurking around.
With little movement on stage on stage or banter between songs, Doves' wonderful compositions were pushed to the forefront. Nodding and singing along to their favourite cuts from all three of the act's full-lengths, it was evident that fans didn't seem to mind the lo-key performance. Subtle rays of red and blue light illuminated the performers, adding to the atmosphere being created by melding perfectly with the music being turned out. Basking in the tasteful lighting, the guys were all smiles as they wrapped up the last show of their Japanese tour. The three dates in Osaka, Nagoya, and Tokyo marked the band's second trip to Japan this year. The first visit saw them playing amongst the glorious mountains and forest of Naeba Ski Resort as part of the Fuji Rock Festival.

Although they weren't overly talkative, the mood between songs was light. Goodwin paused at one point to snap a few pictures of the cheering crowd. Rebelski filled silences by playing notes from the theme to horror classic Friday The 13th. The chilling sounds creeping from his instrument were soon disrupted by the next escalating selection showing that although the eve of fright had arrived, Doves were here to keep the city safe. |
