Leaders Of Men...The Park's Urban Flight Gives An Inoculation To Fear
"Here comes the fear again. Oh-oh... The end is near again. Oh-oh," spouted Jarvis Crocker in Pulp's dark, yet emboldening opening track from 1997's criminally underrated This Is Hardcore. Yet the furthest thing from that reality was realized when Newcastle's pride and joy came out and played for history this night. No, not the delicious ale that runs resplendent on lips and throats throughout the world regularly, I'm talking about Maximo Park, the unstoppable quintet who gave Japan, puns aside, its newest meaning to 'Parklife.' Back again after their Rising Sun debut at Fuji Rock'05, The Park continued joyously in the freedoms found within their inaugural sprawling opus A Certain Trigger (Warp Records/ Beat Records). .
Captained once more by the other Paul Smith (vocals), whose smart mod ware, disarming, infectious demeanor and uncanny ability of knowing just when to catch flight as a vintage Lee Roth did, rightfully electrified and calmed passengers and copilots Duncan Lloyd (guitar), Archie Tiku (bass), Tom English (drums) and Lukas Wooller (keys) alike to seal the deal for future bookings beyond. The first of many splits coming in "Fear Of Falling," Smith uttered astride his beaming smile of sheer giddiness to a rapturous response, "I can't imagine leaving!" Neither could anyone else inside as Smith effortlessly charted a course into more and more favorable winds in this airborne funhouse. Regularly turning to his chief copilot/navigator in creative, frenzied joys Wooller, all inside bore witness of what would have happened had an extremely animated Manzarek existed, baiting an equally encouraging Morrison: Pure and undiluted pandemonium was witnessed as they duly fueled each other's rousing energies, spreading roundly throughout.
Unneeded like their reassuring words in "Apply Some Pressure," their repeating racer that begs you to hit the restart button upon losing everything, this Park lost nothing tonight, only charting gains. Keeping high above all turbulence, this Park made it clear they have unlimited hours of operation and no waiting in line as well.
