Armand Van Helden / Santos @ Shin-Kiba aGeha (30th Sept '05)
All The Way Mad, All The Way Hyped And Rightfully So
Plato said, "When the music of a society changes, the whole society will change." Lenin said, "The best and the quickest way to undermine any society is through its music." Strong and true words ominously blared in Pop Will Eat Itself's "The Incredible P.W.I.E. vs. The Moral Majority" as it launched into their infectiously seminal "Dance Of The Mad Bastards." This 1990 combo perfectly forecasted the future convergences in dance music, between rock and hip-hop, with big beats strewn throughout as this midnight to dawn party co-anchored and fueled by Armand Van Helden and Santos brought out the blended beast within us all effortlessly.
In addition to his trademark blends representative of both his love of seventies and nineties rock and hip-hop richness found within his native New York City, Van Helden's new album Nympho poured out of his master pot of blended brews. Vigorously, both captivating and liberating all the same, he stridently struck a fine balance as he spun high above the main floor in his stunning argyle sweater vest. Blending AC/DC's "Highway To Hell" into big beats as it swirled seamlessly into "Smells Like Teen Spirit" snippets, the floor ebbed and flowed in absolute effervescent jubilation. A subdued "Song No.2" led into the Stripes' sample staple "7 Nation Army." Dishing out the piping fresh "Got Over You," soon handed the kitchen over to Santos who fluidly finished what Helden started. Full on funky house breaks first made legend from 2001's R U Shakadelic, Santos continued his merry ways, dispensing material from his Japan-only pre-release of his latest Home Sweet Home, an album not to be available elsewhere until 2006! Matters staying more than solid, this 11 plus year veteran, whose remix of Helden's "Funk Phenomena" long ago made them firm believers in each other, increased his faithful. Finding sweet duplications, converts within relished his forthcoming single "Pump It Up" as his famed "S" insignia projected hugely for this superhero of the decks.
Between equally impressive brews, they came. They spun. They Conquered.
