Date Course Pentagon Royal Garden @ Shibuya Club Quattro (6th Jun '05)
The Future's So Bright I Gotta Wear Shades
Chaos is never portrayed as a good thing. We are programmed from the time of birth to fear a life without order. Rules, laws, procedures, and systems of belief are all forced upon us to avoid this as much as possible. However, after witnessing Date Course Pentagon Royal Garden's "Document Of Musical From Chaos" show at Club Quattro the idea of chaos doesn't seem all that bad. In fact, I think a little bit of creative pandemonium should definitely be encouraged from time to time.
A huge roar erupted from the sold-out audience as the lights dimmed and the members of DCPRG began to file out of the backstage area. The biggest applause came when band leader Naruyoshi Kikuchi took his position behind two keyboards that were set up at the front of the stage, facing the rest of the group. With his back to the crowd, Kikuchi began snapping his fingers and swaying back and forth as the collective eased their way into the night's first number.
Fusing together a blistering mix of jazz, funk, rock, experimental, and psychedelic music, the ensemble turned in a scorching set that had the eclectic crowd of Japanese hep cats dancing and nodding along in approval. DCPRG's seamless flow of fantastic rhythms was so hot that Kikuchi and one of the group's guitarists had to wear sunglasses throughout the entire performance. For those not in the know, wearing shades in a dark club at night is definitely a sign of good things to come. Want proof, just ask Timbuk 3!
Anchored by the fantastic organic beats erupting from their two drummers and two percussionists, DCPRG dazzled attendees with head-spinning compositions such as "Playmate At Hanoi", "Circle/Line-Hard Core Peace", and with their interpretations of "Stayin' Alive" and "Hey Joe". Part-way through the concert, the band line-up swelled from nine to 14 as several horn players emerged from the wings. Their contributions provided an extra boost of energy and soulfulness to the sounds being created.
For over an hour, instrumental grooves grew, faded, and headed in several different musical directions at the same time. Not for the inexperienced or weak hearted, the group played non-stop for 70 minutes before taking their first break. Lasting perhaps 30 seconds, after the short breather they kicked into their next batch of mesmerizing ear candy.
Although the show was long, it didn't feel like it. Time seemed to fly by as attendees were kept continually entertained by the awesome abilities and showmanship of DCPRG.
It's no secret that Kikuchi has assembled a top notch group of musicians. It was hard not to marvel at the amount of musical talent crowded on to Quattro's stage. With so much happening it would have been easy to lose control and overwhelm spectators. However, like all great large-scale acts, Kikuchi and the rest of DCPRG pulled everything together brilliantly to create an exciting evening for their constantly growing legion of fans. |
