Shinjuku Loft 6th Anniversay "RHYTHM OF FEAR" @ Shinjuku Loft (22nd May '05)
feat: Metalchicks , Nirgilis , Zoobombs
"Plenty Of Noisemakers, But Where's The Cake?"
|
It isn't everyday that you turn six. Realizing this, Shinjuku Loft went all out for their sixth anniversary, spreading their birthday party out over the course of two months. April and May saw numerous great acts making appearances at the club to help celebrate. Tonight's bill saw Zoobombs, Nirgilis, and Metalchicks delivering spectacular concerts to mark the special occasion.
|

The audience nodded along in approval as Yoshinaga screamed out her lyrics and Yoshimura furiously beat on her kit. The group's between song banter was almost as entertaining as their amazing playing. Their material may be loud and raw, but the girls themselves were very soft spoken on stage. Yoshimura's whispers of "domo arigatou" were barely audible and had several members of the audience shocked that a drummer that powerful would speak so softly. My mom always warned me that it's the quiet ones you have to watch out for...
|
Metalchicks got the small, but appreciative crowd going early on with their brilliant blend of hard rock and new wave sounds. Featuring Sugar Yoshinaga from Buffalo Daughter on guitar and Yuka Yoshimura (who has played with the likes of OOIOO and DMBQ) on drums, the duo ripped through a tight set of music from their upcoming album.

Nirgilis' showed that pop music is no where near as bad indie rock lovers make it out to be. The Tokyo quartet's excellent performance mixed together a bit of angular guitar, some electronic beats, and a whole lot of poppy goodness. Lead singer Iwata Acchu gleefully bounced around on stage, dancing along to her band's infectious tunes. The group's bang-on cover of Britney Spear's "Toxic" came off perfectly, creating a fun, energetic mood throughout the venue.

The positive vibes were furthered by Zoobombs blistering 40 minute rock n' roll onslaught. The Tokyo quintet's awesome aural assault was accented by saxophonist Nobuko Hino. Her wonderful playing helped raised the level of the group's already mind-blowing soundscapes. The show opened with a jam session before the band kicked into "Highway A Go Go". Frontman Don Matsuo looked like a man possessed as he raised his guitar to the sky and then fell to the floor while belting out his impassioned vocals.
All of the night's songs eventually morphed into a no-holds-barred jam session that allowed each member of Zoobombs to showcase their talent. Reading each other perfectly, they put their faith in the music and let it decide where it wanted to go. This unique approach lead to remarkably intense versions of "South Central Rock" and the brand-new "Black Sun/White Moon".
|
The group ended with New San Francisco's "Way In/Way Out". The audience bounced along as the band unleashed the expansive, psychedelic track. Half way through the number, Matsuo flung his guitar over his back and began pounding on Matta's keyboard. While the two attempted to extract as many distorted notes as possible from the helpless instrument, percussionist Piro bashed away on his assortment of drums at break-neck speed. Matsuo soon grabbed his guitar and added to the wonderful noise filling Loft. Oozing cool, he raised his guitar as the song faded out and then slammed it down hard as his bandmates joined in for one last blast, ending things with a fantastic wall of sound. Their stunning display of musicianship floored attendees and showed why Zoobombs are considered one the country's top live acts.
Definitely one of the better birthday parties I've been to, the only thing missing was cake and ice cream. There's always next year though! |
