BOOM BOOM SATELLITES @ Shibuya AX (29th Apr '05)
The Little Things
Using dozens of sheets of wrinkled plastic, Boom Boom Satellites managed to turn Shibuya AX's massive performance area into a much smaller, intimate space. Tarps were draped along the sides, top, and back of the stage framing the band and giving the appearance of a really cool, live action diorama.
Sauntering out just after 7 pm, the Tokyo group's electro-pop goodness had the capacity crowd grooving up a storm throughout their 15 song set. A barrage of blinding strobe lights ushered in "Rise And Fall", the lead-off track from the recently released Full Of Elevating Pleasures. Masayuki Nakano bounced along to the electrifying beats being created with his sequencer and several other gadgets. Meanwhile, his partner in crime, guitarist Michiyuki Kawashima, filled the room with his effect enhanced vocals.
Focusing on Full Of Elevating Pleasures, Nakano, Kawashima, and drummer Naoki Hirai showcased the energetic and innovative musical stylings that have helped establish Boom Boom Satellites as one of the top acts in Japan. Mixing elements of drum and bass, electronica, house, pop, rock, and punk together to form an intoxicating and highly danceable sound, the band had little problem winning over the legions of exuberant fans packed into the venue.

Although each of the epic tracks was well received, "Let It All Come Down" and "Fogbound" stood out from the rest. After a long bout of heavy dance music, the psychedelic, brit-poppish "Let It All Come Down" provided a nice change of pace and allowed the sweaty masses to cool down for a few moments. "Fogbound" saw Nakano and Hirai being masked under a thick haze of flashbulbs as they worked with their respective instruments. Kawashima, who had disappeared backstage for a few moments, re-emerged about half way through the number. His guitar playing added impressive sonic diversity to the fantastic rave-like environment being created by his bandmates.
Having performed in countless clubs and at many large scale domestic and international events such as Fuji Rock, Summersonic, and the legendary Glastonbury festival, few would question the group's abilities in a live setting. While the band was in top form as they ripped through their electro-infused show, it was the little things that elevated their performance. Nakano walking to the front of the stage to cheer and dance along with attendees during "Fogbound", the draped off stage which looked almost like the band was being surrounded by aluminium foil, and a brilliant live show are just a few of the items that helped boost the overall intensity of the concert, making it much more memorable for all involved.
After selling out both the Liquid Room and Shibuya AX, a third Tokyo date has been added to end Boom Boom Satellites current round of gigs. The show will be taking place on May 19 at the Liquid Room in Ebisu. It'll be interesting to see what extra things the group adds to their set to complement their awesome musical skills and ensure that the "Elevating Pleasures" tour wraps up on a high note.
