Shibusa Shirazu Orchestra @ Kichijoji Star Pine's Cafe (13th Apr '05)
A Global-A-Go-Go Tune-Up In Effervescence For A Slightly Slimmed Down 26-Piece Shibusa Shirazu
- part2 -
With their massive brass section leading the way from the second floor dressing rooms, Fuwa's Shibusa Shirazu opening up a long swelling jam that spiritually bled into a resonant 15 minute version of Jimi's pure "Little Wing." Need I say more? Not of course, but I must add with each sonic confection collectively woven in the guidance of Daisuke, the aforementioned man slowly transformed from an obviously and popularly restrained Tokyo salary man (office worker as they are known here) to the big kid inside.
The process was near complete within the first hour of Shibusa's nonstop 2 1/2 hour plus performance. From the mere loosening of his tie and top button of his shirt to the removal of his suit jacket to his ditching of his dress shirt to his wearing of a then purchased Shibusa t-shirt and finally to a comical point where he took control of one of the microphones and began to sing, much to the chagrin of Daisuke and to the communal amusement of all.
Yet, with the stakes forever rising from a long, steady, yet serendipitous road trip within a forever changing lineup that commenced in 1988 and still remains the brainchild of bassist/conductor/ringleader of sorts Daisuke Fuwa, this night's performance within the intimate two-floored Star Pine's Caf? deep below the streets had the ever increasing honor of being their second to last tune-up for their inaugural tour of Russia. In addition to this exciting reality for such a large touring troupe, it shall also mark the triumphant and exploratory return to Europe, reconnecting them to the continent that bestowed them past honors of playing on the main stage at Glastonbury back in 2002. Keeping them abroad throughout late spring and most of the summer, one of the early highlights shall undoubtedly be when playing alongside the likes of friends Sun Ra Arkestra at the Uncool Festival in Valle di Poschiavo, Switzerland (www.uncool.ch) in the first weekend of May. Dedicated to Egberto Gismonti, this festival celebrating jazz improvised on a planetary and cosmic magic range ensures an endless pour of Shibusa's stirring outer limits blend for consumption.

Sure alcohol played its usual hand to grease the wheels so to speak, but the essence in the brilliance behind the surging power of Shibusa's free-flowing creative community gathered is their ability to come together, appropriately merging their individual flavors and humor into a wholly satisfying mesmerizing genre mix of medleys. Whether it was the dueling horns or drums, the creative blows both anticipated and followed by artists onstage (dancers, painter, musicians) or above (visuals projected), they worked effectively to weave a most beautiful tapestry.
Where's David Lynch when you need him? He should have been present as well as Quentin Tarantino amongst other directors as this night was a savory cross-pollination of music that could have been in Jackie Brown and Lost Highway and of course more with a healthy infusion of vintage Herbie Hancock alongside their own original gems including the ever-charismatic Kiro Sorimachi's belting out his self-penned "Kote." Fittingly, one of their last songs featured was a spirited "Anchors Aweigh" awash in smiles all around. Indeed, raise them and sails as well, the winds are favorable and blowing west. Full speed ahead!
