Shibusa Shirazu Orchestra @ Kichijoji Star Pine's Cafe (13th Apr '05)
A Global-A-Go-Go Tune-Up In Effervescence For A Slightly Slimmed Down 26-Piece Shibusa Shirazu

"If we can rock together... Why can't we walk together?" Well, those were the emphatic and earnest words of Kevin Seconds back in the mid 80's from his 7 Seconds anthem that positively spouted unity from a multi-faceted rallying cry in music. And while old school pop punk is the absolute last genre of many that you'd want to include in describing the massive communal minded Tokyo-based avant-garde free-form blenders Shibusa Shirazu Orchestra, their unbridled individual and collective freedom is deeply found within punk's overall joyous unrestrained roots. Coupled with a most formidable amassed power in creative convictions, it all clearly led to another unique wondrous night of happy deconstructions and constructions throughout a usual sumptuous ebbing and flowing groove.

Yet, with the stakes forever rising from a long, steady, yet serendipitous road trip within a forever changing lineup that commenced in 1988 and still remains the brainchild of bassist/conductor/ringleader of sorts Daisuke Fuwa, this night's performance within the intimate two-floored Star Pine's Caf? deep below the streets had the ever increasing honor of being their second to last tune-up for their inaugural tour of Russia. In addition to this exciting reality for such a large touring troupe, it shall also mark the triumphant and exploratory return to Europe, reconnecting them to the continent that bestowed them past honors of playing on the main stage at Glastonbury back in 2002. Keeping them abroad throughout late spring and most of the summer, one of the early highlights shall undoubtedly be when playing alongside the likes of friends Sun Ra Arkestra at the Uncool Festival in Valle di Poschiavo, Switzerland (www.uncool.ch) in the first weekend of May. Dedicated to Egberto Gismonti, this festival celebrating jazz improvised on a planetary and cosmic magic range ensures an endless pour of Shibusa's stirring outer limits blend for consumption.

Going far beyond being more than just a collective happily on their wayward interstellar overdrive, Shibusa Shirazu are true to their own words proudly printed on their site. Unquestionably, they are a band wholly unlike any other on the planet. As always the case, tonight they freely encouraged all within to collaborate while somehow deliciously distilling it all together for one long organic groove that surely had many dearly departed musical luminaries in attendance high above smiling in approval from start to finish.
No small feat in itself to be achieved each and every time conductor Daisuke assembles Shibusa as the sum of such parts (this night being 2 drummers, a percussionist, 2 guitarists, 5 saxophonists, 2 synthesizer/keyboardists, a violinist, a tuba player, a trombonist, 2 trumpeters, a flutist/singer, 2 pairs of dancers, 2 singers/actors, a painter, a video jockey, an graphic artist, a bassist in addition to the man in the lead himself seemingly and intuitively knew how to give and take appropriately within such close proximity of each other. While it could've quite easily become far too much, horribly cacophonous and muddled, they all coalesced seamlessly. |
