Jimmy Eat World @ Shibuya O-East (4th April '05)
Nice And Simple
You can label it as emo, pop, pop-punk, punk, or whatever else you want to, but at the end of the day Jimmy Eat World make basic, unpretentious rock songs. The talented American act possess an amazing knack for crafting catchy choruses that instantly become entrapped in the hearts of music lovers. They don't bog their music down with loads of effects, and there's nothing complicated about their straightforward, no-frills live performance. The group have worked hard to keep things nice and simple, keeping the focus on having fun and making it easy for everyone to enjoy their infectious tunes.

At 8 p.m. the lights dimmed and the four members of Jimmy Eat World calmly strolled on stage. The eager crowd of teens and 20 year olds packed into O-East instantly began pumping their fists as the band kicked into the title-track from their most recent release, Futures. Frontman Jim Adkins bounced around on stage and shook his shoulder length hair as he belted out his impassioned lyrics. The fantastic sound in the spacious room allowed for his excellent vocals to be heard clearly by attendees who more often than not chose to join in on the singing.
Opening act Oceanlane started tonight's show off with a stellar 30 minute set. The Tokyo quintet's melodic, guitar-driven rock went over well with the near capacity crowd of foreign and Japanese spectators. Anchored by the powerful playing of guitarists Hajime and Kay, the group played several soaring selections from last year's On My Way Back Home that had the audience roaring their approval by the end of their performance. Having already been confirmed for this summer's Fuji Rock Festival, you can expect to hear a lot more from Oceanlane in the not-so-distant future.

The first single from the quartet's self-titled, break-through album, "Bleed American", received a roar of approval from the kids bouncing and crowd surfing up front. A perfect example of Adkins ability to write top-notch rock numbers, the track, along with the album's other singles "The Middle" and "Sweetness" were definitely the audience's favourites. |

After performing "A Praise Chorus" the group retreated backstage for a few moments. Re-emerging for a three-song encore, Adkins exclaimed "Fucking eh, we'll play some more," as his bandmates launched into Clarity's "Table For Glasses". The 75 minute performance was closed out with a rollicking version of "Sweetness". As the audience screamed along to the energetic anthem, the guys banged away on their instruments with big smiles on their faces. |
Aside from Adkins jumping and spinning around there was little movement on the bare stage and between song banter was kept to a minimum. The emphasis instead was placed on simply delivering a good, solid rock concert that showcased Jimmy Eat World's solid musical abilities. Since forming over a decade ago the band have always seemingly favoured substance over style. Their down-to-earth personalities and four acclaimed full-lengths unabashedly prove this.
With a wealth of great material to power their show, doing things the nice and simple way should continue to propel Jimmy Eat World to great heights for years to come.
