The Dirty Dozen Brass Band with The Benevento/Russo Duo @ Shibuya Club Quattro (28th Feb. '05)
It's Party Time!
The Dirty Dozen Brass Band's Efrem Towns wasted little time letting the exuberant crowd gathered at Club Quattro know what tonight's show was all about. Screaming "Y'all ready to party," as he strutted out on stage, the trumpet player soon joined his band mates in the first of many glorious gems.

While few would debate the quality of their recorded material, live is where the Dirty Dozen Brass Band truly get the chance to shine. The beauty of the group's concerts is that you never know what's going to happen. Once they emerge on stage all bets are off and the only rule is that everyone present must have the time of their lives. The first of two shows at Quattro proved to be no different. Watching the guys play it was evident how much fun they were having. As each of the horn players took turns performing mind-blowingly good solos, the rest of the group danced, bounced, clapped, and joked around with each other. The overwhelming amount of positive energy radiating from the stage was absorbed by the audience who cheered and joined in with some two-stepping of their own.
The septet's astounding ability to combine gospel, soul, rock, jazz, blues, and funk with traditional brass band sounds has gained them world-wide recognition. For almost three decades the New Orleans ensemble have wowed listeners with their highly delectable sounds and have gained many a new fan through their contributions to works by David Bowie, Elvis Costello, and Modest Mouse.

Breaking into uplifting versions of classic tracks such as "My Feet Can't Fail Me Now" and "Africa", along with great covers of "Get Up Stand Up" and Outkast's "The Whole World", the group proved that a band can showcase excellent musicianship and still have a blast while doing it. |
Not ones to short-change their fans, the guys pounded out their fantastic brass rhythms for almost two hours. Departing just before 10 pm, they returned a few moments later to appease the large number of attendees who were literally begging for more. Drummer Terence Higgins walked to the front of the stage so that he could better enjoy the festivities. After thanking everyone he got the crowd to begin chanting "Ain't Nothing But A Party," as the band kicked into the opening track from 2002's Medicated Magic. |

The highlight of their performance was their cover of Radiohead's "Paranoid Android". Starting off quiet, the track was slowly consumed by Benevento's loud, distorted organ and Russo powerful drumming. Showcasing their amazing chemistry, the two morphed the song into a drawn out spacey number before ending it on a heavy note. Definitely one of the better opening acts I've witnessed, judging by the roars of approval that echoed through the venue after each track the band should be back as headliners soon. |
The Benevento/Russo Duo started things off on a high note with a brilliant 65 minute performance of jam-based avant-garde jazz. Very cool electronic sound effects were added throughout each of their pieces, allowing the band to rapidly change the mood and vibe of their instrumental compositions. Alternating between really chilled out, laid back tracks and hard-edged, funky songs the group kept the mature audience highly entertained.
