EXTREME THE DOJO Vol.12 feat. Every time I Die, As I Lay Dying and Shadows Fall @ Shibuya CLUB QUATTORO (7th Feb '05)
Tattoos and a Whole Lotta Hair
If you wanted to perform on stage tonight at Club Quattro two things were necessary. You had to have a wide assortment of tattoos and a whole whack of hair. Others things, like the ability to play extremely technical, heavy music at insane speeds, were also needed, but first and foremost you had to had to possess ink and locks.

Showcasing five of War Within's 10 tracks, Fair and his dreadlocks quickly became the star of the concert. His hair was in constant motion, flailing everywhere as he sang, danced, and jumped around on stage. Sounding a little winded by the half-way mark, Fair admitted that this was the group's first show in two and a half months and they were all out of shape. Despite this he and his bandmates proceeded to give their all until the very end. After several monster solos by guitarists Jonathan Donais and Matt Bachand, Fair told the crowd that they were "a bunch of crazy motherfuckers" and dedicated a song "to all the lovely ladies" before wrapping things up with "What Drives the Weak". Returning for a one-song encore, Shadows Fall delivered a lethal version of "Fleshold". As audience members hurled themselves into one another on the floor, the band all headbanged causing a sea of whirling hair to engulf the stage.
Although headliners Shadows Fall had two members with short hair, they were still allowed to perform thanks in part to front man Brain Fair's huge dreadlocks. Falling almost to his knees, they more than made up for the lack of manes on the band's bassist and drummer. Opening with "The Light That Binds", the lead off track from their most recent effort, War Within, the Boston quintet tore through their 65 minute set. Fair dedicated the second song, "Crushing Belial", to all the "old school fuckers" in attendance. With the band's sound featuring many elements of classic metal, their whole performance appealed to older fans of the genre. This could be seen in the make-up of the audience. Although it bore similarities to the larger crowd that flooded Quattro two days prior for Extreme the Dojo Volume 11, there was definitely a greater number of aging rockers present.

As I Lay Dying came on before Shadows Fall and proceeded to bludgeon the audience with a rapid-fire assault of tracks from Frail Words Collapse. With strobe lights blinding the crowd, vocalist Tim Lambesis ran out and screamed "Let's go" as the rest of the group tore into "Falling Upon Deaf Ears". Between tracks the predominantly Japanese audience tried to impress the heavily tattooed Lambesis with their death metal screams. He, on the other hand, tried to amaze everyone by using a few basic Japanese phrases. Realizing that that would only get him so far, he decided to concentrate on blowing minds with As I Lay Dying's heavy as fuck mix of hardcore and metal. |

Placing a strong focus on showmanship, the three jumped around on stage and headbanged together. One of their best choreographed sequences came during "Distance is Darkness." The trio all lifted their instruments high in the air, holding them completely vertical while they continued to play. Then as Lambesis launched in with another beastly growl they all slammed them back down at the same time without missing a note. |
The singer was constantly on the moving during the performance. When he wasn't beating his chest while letting out blood-curling screams he kept occupied by bouncing around and shaking his full head of hair in unison with the rest of the band. Bassist Clint Norris and guitarists Phil Sgrosso and Nick Hipa were all about doing things in sync. |
Every Time I Die kicked the show off with a much needed blast of metallic-infused hardcore. Concentrating on material from 2003's Hot Damn!, the quintet, just as their predecessors would soon do, used their heavily tattooed bodies to beat on their chosen instruments with all their might. With hair and sweat flying, the group worked the appreciative audience into a feverish fury with their intense eight-song performance. A fantastic opening act, their energy and enthusiasm, along with abundance of hair and tattoos, helped set the mood for the night.
