Geography At Its Best

The phrase "musical journey" is thrown around way too often. Despite how meaningless and cliched it has become, it's the only way I can describe Isis' awe-inspiring performance at Club Quattro as part of Extreme the Dojo Volume 11.

The Los Angeles quintet's 55 minute set played out like a fantastic road trip. Along the way listeners encountered wide open roads, steep hills, rocky terrains, and numerous other man-made and natural wonders.

Reaching the peak, everyone was given a brief glimpse of heaven as the band filled their ears with a glorious stream of swirling noise. Heading down the far side of the mountain, a burst of hardcore caused the car to quickly lose control and slide into a shallow ditch. Luckily, with the exception of perhaps a few eardrums, nothing was damaged and the vehicle was soon able to finish its descent.
Opening with the epic "So Did We", the band led the capacity crowd through heavily congested streets as Aaron Turner's coarse roar fought to rise above the dense background of distorted guitars. Escaping the aggressive confines of the city, the group let loose with a soaring instrumental as they made their way across the countryside. Slowly climbing through a large mountainous region, the power of Isis' unique brand of art-metal continued to build as attendees were guided to the top.

Pausing for a quick tune up, the service station's usual radio mix of classic rock and golden oldies was replaced with buzzing atmospheric sounds. Launching into Panopticon's "In Fiction", the band pulled away and got back on the highway. Coasting through a lush valley, the sheer force of Aaron Harris' awesome drumming and Jeff Caxide's thundering bass made the thick vegetation shake as the vehicle motored by. Turner growled his vocals as the car sped into a winding tunnel. Illuminated by dark red lights, the crowd began to relax as they traveled along the long winding road that mirrored the escalating web of sound. Before exiting the underpass, Turner returned with another blast of barked lyrics that blew away the driver of the pick-up in the next lane. He begun to swerve, but quickly recovered and avoided a near accident as the track powered its way to the end.
So we've already hit traffic, open roads, a mountain, a valley, a huge tunnel, and have almost been in two accidents and Isis have only finished their second song! Told you this was one heck of a road trip. Focusing entirely on their most recent release Panopticon, which was recently released in Japan by Daymare Recordings, the band's entire performance played out in this fashion. An awesome album start to finish; it was no surprise that the already spectacular songs came across much stronger in a live setting.ISIS ISIS

Each track shifted in several directions as it was re-created on stage by the group's extremely talented members. The mix of foreign and Japanese hardcore, punk, and metal fans applauded the band's efforts by nodding along in approval and flashing devil horns at every given opportunity.
Tonight's voyage ended with a killer version of "Grinning Mouths". Alternating between spacey and loud rock music, Isis guided everyone over a gigantic bridge whose views rivalled the track's rising intensity. After successfully conquering one final bumpy avenue the band returned the crowd back to the club. The journey was a complete success. Enthralled by all I had experienced I would be honoured to have the group lead me around anytime. Judging by the chants of "Isis" that echoed through the venue as the guys packed up their gear I'm not the only one who feels this way.
