Shonen Knife with Polysics, Electric Eel Shock @ Daikanyama Unit (19th Dec '04)
"And to all A Good Night" - part2 -
|
With strobe lights flooding the stage with blinding white light, the night's headliners emerged to loud cheers. Kicking into "Konnichiwa", the Yamano sisters did their best impressions of Gene Simmons and Paul Stanley as they bobbed their instruments in sync with one another and head banged. With big smiles on their faces, Atsuko bopped around with her bass and Naoko sang and played guitar while drummer Mana kept the beat. While their performance lacked the visual presence that Polysics had, the trio still managed to keep the mixed crowd of gaijin and Japanese 20-somethings entertained. Instead of frills, the group utilized their solid catalogue of pop driven punk and 23 years worth of live experience to drive their set.
|

After an hour of playing, the band thanked everyone for coming and retreated backstage. They returned a few minutes later clad in matching Santa hats amidst chants of "Shonen Knife". After blasting through a tight version of "Ride the Rocket", Naoko said thank you again and wished the crowd a Merry Christmas before ending with "Space Christmas". A fitting way to end a great night, Shonen Knife and company managed to spread Christmas cheer and bring joy to all who had the good fortunate to attend. After seeing the beaming faces flocking out onto the street after the show, it became clear that the gift of music really is the perfect present.
Merry Christmas to all...

Looking to showcase several blasts from the past, near perfect renditions of "Mystery Drug Store" and 712's "Blue Oyster Cult" were met with pumping fists from the appreciative audience. Currently recording a new album, the girls previewed two songs as a special treat to attendees. Following in the same vein of the bulk of their material, "Spider House" and "Rock Society" feature the same well written, jangly pop sounds that fans around the world know and love.
