Hawaiian6/ Idol Punch @ Shinjuku Loft (11th Oct. '04)
Three More, Two More, and Take it to the Left
|
Obesity is a problem across the world. Although not as widespread in Japan as in other countries, it is still a growing concern. Today's youth rely too heavily on a Mc-diet and don't get enough exercise. Looking to combat this, Hawaiian6 and Idol Punch did their best to make certain all in attendance tonight received a solid punk-rock work out.
|
Exploding onto the stage, Idol Punch quickly got the crowd warmed up. Concentrating primarily on cardiovascular exercises, the quartet's blend of speed-freak street punk and hardcore got the kids dancing and jumping. Frontman Racco did an admirable job of playing the role of fitness instructor. Choosing to lead by example, he continually flung himself across the stage as he screamed out lyrics. Determined to keep the crowd moving to the beat, Dan-jilly destroyed his kit with his powerful drumming. Travelling at about 1000 km/hr the quartet vigorously ripped through their performance, leaving both themselves and the capacity audience drenched in sweat.
After taking a short break to rest their muscles, stretch, and get re-hydrated everyone was ready for another training session. With many already clad in the necessary exercise clothes (towel, sweat bands, and Hawaiian6 T-shirt), they were more than prepared for the energetic program that Hawaiin6 had prepared.
Looking to try something different, Hawaiian6 had the audience start off with some weight lifting. With no barbells to be found, Idol Punch's Racco and Dan-jilly lent their services by diving off of the stage and proceeding to crowd surf. Their selfless act led to a dozen other males deciding to do the same. With fans' hearts pumping and blood flowing the trio built upon the cardiovascular work out that was presented earlier. Along with dancing and jumping, people pumped their fists in the air, screamed along, and attempted to push through the mob of perspiring bodies to get closer to the stage.
|
Concentrating on tracks from their two Pizza of Death albums, Souls and Across the Ending, the band's melodic pop-punk gems provided the perfect soundtrack to get in shape to. Incredibly catchy, each new song was met with loud cheers. With hair plastered to his face, guitarist Clutch passionately belted out each lyric while bassist Tire occasionally chiming in with solid back-up vocals. Pumped up from the abundance of physical activity they were being exposed to, each member of the crowd joined in for the choruses and at times attempted to drown out the band. Turning in an extremely tight and immensely fun set, it is easy to see why the group has become such a popular act amongst Japanese punk and rock fans.
After watching both acts do a fantastic job of motivating others to shed some unwanted pounds and tone up their bodies it became clear that diets are not the way to go. If you really want to lose weight and get in shape, just stand near the stage at a punk show and follow the crowd. As for Idol Punch and Hawaiian6, if they are ever looking for some extra cash to supplement their musical income they should consider dropping their resumes off at Gold's Gym.. |
