The Most Notorious Vol. 18 @ Shimokitazawa Shelter (25th Sept. '04)
Medical Breakthrough
An absolutely packed Shimokitazawa Shelter was the scene for tonight's event. Although Kirihito and Most did superb jobs, it was the medical mindsets of Melt Banana and K.K. Null's noise onslaughts that stole the show. Conducting a sonic operation of utmost importance, the two combined their efforts to create new hybrids of sound. With hundreds of willing patients in attendance, the two acts set out to destroy all conventional notions of music that the crowd held. Clad in his trademark surgical mask, Melt Banana . guitarist Agata's monstrous riffs cut through the venue with scalpel like precision. Melding elements of punk, rock, metal, hardcore, pop, electronica, and noise into an insanely potent concoction, the Tokyo quartet worked the crowd's ears through an intense pre-op session. Utilizing scientific formulas and experiments from last year's Cell-Space, the technical playing of the four medical examiners wowed all patients. Had they witnessed it, even the bigwigs at the Japan Medical Association would have applauded their actions. Lead by head practitioner Yasuko O.'s piercing directives, the group's ground-breaking medical skills played a major role in guaranteeing the positive outcome of the surgery that was soon to follow
Dr. Null appeared five minutes later. Bathed in blue light, the physician spent the majority of his time bent over his operating table, meticulously twisting various knobs that were vital to the procedure. Beginning with a wall of sound built from bursts of feedback and distortion, he ensured that everyone's auditory senses were well taken care of early on. Introducing a looped, heavy techno beat into the environment, Null showcased his astounding ability to take apart and then re-construct single sounds. With the surgery progressing, the anaesthesia that was administered during the pre-op began wearing off. The once compassionate physician assumed the persona of a doctor gone mad and began disfiguring the noises in every manner possible. As a flurry of loud sounds bounced off the walls of the operating room, a scream emerged from the back as one patient could not endure the pain any longer. Wiping sweat from his brow, Null regained his composure and remembered that he had taken an oath to help people. Warping the barrage of spine-rattling noise into another pleasant wall of sound, he increased the dosage of volume at a steady pace in order to examine if all was going according to plan. Content with the results of his surgery, Null lowered his levels and engulfed the room in silence as orderlies rushed out to prep the post-op area. In the end, the operation was by all accounts a resounding success. All patients are expected to make a full recovery. Although some advocates may accuse tonight's surgeons of resorting to excessive medical practices at times, they should know that each step was necessary in order to further expand the ears and mindset of all present. With numerous patients eagerly awaiting treatment around the world, Dr. Null and the esteemed medical examiners in Melt Banana will be performing many more sonic breakthroughs in the near future.
