button V∞REDOMS @ Ebisu Liquidroom (8th Aug. '04)

The first time I visited the Liquid Room was in April of 2003. After wandering the maze-like streets of Kabukicho for nearly an hour I finally stumbled upon the venue. With this in mind, it should have come as little surprise that I'd spend another 60 minutes roaming the sidewalks of Ebisu attempting to find the recently moved live house. If it weren't for the kindness of a man on the street who made several phone calls to the Liquid Room and then went out of his way to walk with me to help find the club I'd probably still be looking for it right now. If by some chance he is reading this now, please accept my heartfelt thanks for your kindness.

The plus side of getting lost is that I now know my way around the area surrounding Ebisu station pretty darn good. The downside is that my complete lack of direction made me miss the first 20 minutes of the V∞REDOMS set. Finally setting foot inside the rammed confines of the venue I was met with the sound of intense screams rising above a background of chaotic tribal drumming. Pushing my way through the sweaty masses I was slowly able to make my way onto the floor for a better view of what was unfolding on stage. Set up in a circle, the four members of the band faced one another while they created their wonderful, eccentric brand of psychedelic music. Yoshimi, Atari, and Youjiro were seated at three drum kits while Eye bounced around near a set of turntables and other assorted toys. Three large screens spit out a rapid array of images behind the quartet, providing the perfect visual component to the hypnotic grooves filling the room.

V∞REDOMS With a new album being released shortly, the night provided a great preview of what fans can expect when Seadrum/ House of Sun hits shelves on September 23. Judging by the strong electronic undertone that was prevalent throughout the almost 100 minute long set, the record should see the group further exploring the elements presented on Vision Creation Newsun. Never pausing during the show, the V∞REDOMS produced a continuous stream of ear-pleasing noise that had the sold-out crowd dancing along and yelling their approval to every beat and rhythm. Yoshimi wore a big smile across her face as she played, while Eye became lost under a sea of dreads as he twisted various knobs and let out the occasional scream.

Building into a mesmerizing wall of sound, the potent mix of powerful, spastic drumming and electronic bursts quickly fell silent, with only the sound of cymbals filling the room. Grabbing her mic, Yoshimi began singing. Her soulful vocals provided a sharp contrast to the waves of music still echoing in the ears, minds, and hearts of those in attendance. A kaleidoscope of colour was projected onto the screens as Atari and Youjiro began quietly drumming again. Eye added sporadic blips and began chanting "Sun" as his three bandmates began beating their kits in unison. Images of the sun, the earth, flowers, and animals splashed across the screens while Eye and Yoshimi took turns singing. Rays of light shot through the audience as a white dove flew gracefully over a city behind the band. Standing up, all four members continued to create their beautiful tribal rhythms before stopping, bowing to the crowd and made their way off stage.

V∞REDOMS After two minutes of applause, the band re-emerged wearing straw hats. Playing the part of conductor, Eye raised his hand and the rest of the group began quietly playing along with the electronic sounds he was producing. Although very cool, the spacey, experimental track sucked a bit of the energy out of the crowd. Prior to the encore the audience cheered loudly and moved together as one. Now everyone remained silent and still as they gazed at the V∞REDOMS. Throughout the song the sparse drumming would rise and then fall as Eye raised and lowered his hand to lead his talented orchestra. As the music slowly wound down the band again bowed before packing it in for the night. Not ready to give up yet, the crowd continued to cheer for several more minutes. Eye came out one last time to say "arigato gozaimasu" and then made his final exit.

A smile could be seen on the faces of almost all the spectators as the house lights came back on. For those already frothing in anticipation of the band's next stop in Tokyo make sure you pick up Seadrum/ House of Sun at the end of September. If it's even a fraction of what played out tonight, it should easily become one of the best pieces of Japanese music to be released this year.
