The Vines @ Shibuya Club Quattro (19th May '04)
「One bad apple.... 」
People spilling outside Shibuya Club Quattro holding up placards “any tickets?” says a lot about the popularity of the Vines here. But, compared to other bands, those tickets are a bit more of a gamble. Given that previous reviews have said implied "the good and the bad live shows are polls apart, with a fairly high chance of things falling apart", tonight's punters are playing a high risk game. Maybe it is as if they are down at the racetrack just holding betting slips?
As it turns out the result runs something like "the Vines jockey just gives up and is disqualified." The show tonight was definitely something to watch. If an artist has the intention of showing his art then it is not something to be missed. With an accomplished muscial performance, all the playing around and silly banter will just add spice to the excitement. However, when it is poor....
Craig - "Gimme some drugs"
Audience - "uh?"
Craig - "No, seriously..."
Audience - Frozen silence
However you think about it, not good. F**k, S**t, the four letter words come streaming out, but without going anywhere or making any sense. I'm trying hard to listen and understand what is going on so that I can write up a review. Maybe it is better that the sounds from this show don't make it to me. Let's begin with a bit more humanity maybe? You pretending to be Axl Rose? Certainly could have done with a bit more preparation.
A tad harsh maybe, but not far from the truth.

The distorted riff of "Get Free" starts, could this be the one to save things? Things come in a phrase late, could have been intentional but it didn't sound good. The audience is not feeling much better, anxiety increases and attention turns to Craig's palour.
The rest of the band all show their own shades of bewilderment. Patrick (Bass) sends a steely look, Ryan (Guitar) with head bowed knows there is no way of getting through. What was the expression on his face? Hamish (Drums) seems to be saying "Is this ok?" and taking things on a bit more than absolutely necessary. Whose leading this? The messed up frontman of course. Not really anyone else willing to.

Interesting? In a way perhaps. But about as bad as it could have been.
After the show at a nearby cafe, I got them to play the first album "Highly Evolved". After the drab band just seen there's so much more power, the harsh, gutteral screams, the calming whisper of Craig's voice says to me "yes, this album is good". It feels all the more so today.
Final appraisal...
Craig Nicols, possessor of outstanding sensitivity and a genius for melody. Cannot remain calm, tends to make fun of people. Needs someone he can trust to guide him down the right path.
