Bob Log III with Dixied The Emons @ Shinjuku Loft (5th Feb '04)
Dip it Right Here, Darlin' - part 1 -
Bob Log III is a mystery. With his body covered in leather and spandex, his face masked by a motorcycle helmet and his vocals warped through electronics and alcohol, rumors of the true identity of this one-man blues band abound. Some say he's Tom Waits. Some say he's a member of the Strokes. Others insist that his picking hand is actually a grafted-on monkey paw. That's right. A monkey paw.
I arrived at Shinjuku Loft with a thousand questions. Little did I know that a few of them would be answered before the evening came to a close... |
The Japanese opening band, Dixied the Emons, came to life at 7, to the screams from their fans. They kicked the air in their flared jeans, doing the best Stooges impression they could muster. I must have been near the fan club section, because every girl within spitting distance squealed with delight at the first riff of each song.

Although somewhat derivative, the set became enjoyable through audience involvement and the band's sheer sense of purpose. They flailed around the stage. They contorted their faces. The vocalist even climbed the equipment, imploring the crowd to scream, which they were more than willing to do. Their closer - a punked-up cover of Hall & Oates' "Say No Go" - proved to be their most enjoyable number of the evening. |
But they were about to get an ass-full of Rock'n' Roll, and Bob Log III was their proctologist. "HOT GODDAMMED DAWG!" he hollers, his voice, bellowing through the rotary phone receiver hanging from his helmet, "MY NAME IS BOB LOG THE THIRD, AND I THINK I LUV YOU TOKYO!" He raises his fist to the sky, the leather tassels of his porno-pioneer outfit swaying in the smoke. Before the crowd can holler back their approval, Log is off on the first of many slide guitar tangents. His fingers are like pistons on a runaway train, furiously picking out riffs while his legs pump out a galloping rhythm on a bass drum and trap kit.
