Soft, Sleek and Sinister - part2 -
| "You're on top of the world agaaaaiiinn," coos Murdoch in his dry falsetto. And he's right: we are on top of the world. As a trumpet thumps out a solo, the reticent crowd lets out a collective sigh, (barely audible but no less meaningful) and people begin to sway and swoon to the sounds enveloping them. B&S records can sometimes sound like a Stuart Murdoch solo outing, but here he blends into the sound of equal parts strings, keys, rhythm section and brass. Murdoch addresses the crowd frequently, explaining the band's evolution and asking for volunteers to put him up in Tokyo until Scotland thaws in the spring. He had at least two offers from western fans, but as he continued to speak, a voice from the balcony(w/a thick Glasgow accent) bellowed: "They doon't oonderstaahnd ya!" referring to the Japanese fans. "Oh, but they do," Murdoch countered, "I've done some research." |
| The remaining set was kind to old-school fans by playing more from If You're Feeling Sinister ("Like Dylan in the Movies," "The Fox in the Snow")and Tigermilk ("Electronic Renaissance," "She's Losing It") that from this year's Dear Catastrophe Waitress. The especially exuberant harmonica solo in Sinister's "Me and the Major," nearly found Jackson's button-down appearance erupting from the casual whimsy B&S do best and into a full-on rock n' roll freakout. It wasn't long, however, before he collected himself and pushed on, eyes closed, collar buttoned, back into a static state of subdued bliss. |

The final encore came as a rocked-up version of Tigermilk's "You're Just a Baby," with at least thirteen people on stage performing (including the violas who had been dancing off-stage). Then as they said farewell, I heard another fan offering her place as a refuge from a Glaswegian winter. An extended stay here in Tokyo might be enjoyable for him, but perhaps the cold, harsh climes of his homeland are partly responsible for music this warm and sweet. Then again, perhaps Murdoch is simply too wicked to care. |
