| You don't need to work for NME or hold a Master's in Psychology to be able to pick out the Belle and Sebastian fans on the sidewalk leading up to Shibuya Koukaido: the damaged-looking anglophiles on a Tokyo street stand out like Robert Smith at a real-estate conference. |
| They all shuffle into Shibuya Koukaido, a venue often used folk/nostalgia acts and Q&A sessions for Japanese idols and their fans. While acoustically superior to Shibuya AX - last night's venue - Koukaido, with its theater seating, makes for a more sedate crowd (there was a lot more dancing at AX, apparently). Everyone sits through opener Eugene Kelly's solo acoustic set, giving only mild applause when he pulled out old Vaselines' tunes from his songbook (he picked up on it and played at least three more, thankfully). At long last, the B&S crew - all seven of them - sauntered onto the stage while Kelley finished up calling on the power of the Ganges river to "destroy a Starbucks a day."  |
 Now the crowd was up, standing and cheering as the opening riff of "Expectations" (#2 on Tigermilk) hit the stride of the Velvet Underground at full gallop. Soon after, a cellist and a squad of four violas took their place. Stuart Murdoch, B&S's main songwriter and de-facto leader, strolled back and forth across the stage, thumb in the belt-loop of his pants, singing with the casual detachment of someone rehearsing lines for a play that takes place months away. Lead guitarist Stevie Jackson, with his skinny tie and button-down wardrobe looks like an extra from "A Mighty Wind," his contorted grimace the perfect foil for Murdoch's measured non-chalance. |
