Cause Music Must Be Magic

In my often not-so-humble opinion one of the best live acts in the Canadian indie music scene in Mayor McCa. A one man band with a heart of gold, he possesses an amazing ability to make audiences laugh, gaze on in astonishment, and cry all in the span of a few short minutes.

The Johnny Boys After spending several months touring across the country in support of his most recent effort, El Limb Men Oh Pee, the Mayor was more than prepared for his homecoming gig. Opening with "That's a Wrap" off of Me is He, McCa instantly kicked things into high gear. Whipping through the song, he didn't miss a beat while playing guitar, rapping, and tapping a drum stick that was tied to his wrist on a bar stool. Launching into his classic tale of Hamilton's window washers, "Hey Man, You Got a Nice Job", McCa had the crowd at his mercy as he played guitar, harmonica, tambourine, bass drum, and even stood up for a tap dancing solo during the three minute song.

The Mayor occasionally sings about an area called McCaLand. This magical realm is the place inside of his head where he is king and music and beauty are everywhere. In this world everything produces a unique sound that adds to the overall soundtrack that accompanies his life. Carrying this to the stage, McCa uses anything he can find to create music when performing. This includes, but is not limited to, guitars, drums, kazoos, harmonicas, combs, scissors, whistles, ukuleles, keyboards, and even his stomach and armpits. Watching instruments fly around on stage as McCa picks and chooses his weapons of choice while performing with two or three others at the same time is truly a remarkable sight.

The highlight of the set came during "I Can't Pay the Rent". Spotting Warsawpack MC Lee Raback in the audience (he guests on the album version of the track), McCa called him up on stage to partake in the song. With Raback's rhymes spot on, McCa had to stop halfway through just to comment about how cool Raback was.

With so much unfolding on stage on a nightly basis, McCa's live show has to be witnessed to be truly believed. Similar to someone like Tom Waits, his music can be enjoyed on so many different levels that it is simply impossible not to be entertained. There are those who come to watch a one man band, others to enjoy the humour involved, and those who wish to hear the Mayor's innocent tales. Having written some of the most honest and touching lyrics that this area has produced, his words have touched the lives of those that choose to listen in immeasurable ways.

Easily one of the area's best hidden gems, do a bit of digging and discover the awesome one man band musical sensation that is sweeping the nation!
