When Madness Pays Off - part 1-
british sea powerbritish sea power British Sea Power (BSP) saved what would have been a pretty conventional set with an all out final ten minutes of madness and mayhem. Starting strong the band launched directly into their early single "Fear of Drowning", demonstrating a settled sound of understatement. By the second song there is obviously a show on with their outfits fully uncovered from behind windbreakers and the little drummer boy stomping off the stage and into the audience.

There is a strange dynamic on display, a mix between Pink Floyd Final Cut imagery and the current standard garage band aesthetic. The stage is covered in flora and fowls and the band semi-kitted out in mid twentieth century Rule Britannia gear. The music though references a range of your favorite bands from today and the '80's.
BSP skillfully hit their songs "Spirit of St. Louis", "Childhood Memories", "Something Wicked This Way Comes" and "Remember Me". Then after a raucous number of dueling guitars, Yan switches his singing and rhythm guitar duties with bassist Hamilton for two hushed songs.

But for the most part this was a fan's show, not one for conversion. That is, perhaps, until the last ten minutes when all hell broke loose on stage, the little drummer boy was back out in the crowd and everyone was on everyone else's shoulders. Cymbals were slapped and kicked, and to try to keep the sound coming and things under relative control a roadie picked up a guitar and strummed along. This redemption jam set the crowd into a frenzy and finally brought the show to a climax. No wonder Rough Trade chose to sign them after a particularly wild performance.
