YO LA TENGO @ Nagoya Club Quattro (1st Dec '03)
- part2 -
| To finish the set the band covered the poignant Nuclear War originally recorded by jazz artist Sun Ra. A prolific song about the nuclear threat of the early eighties it takes on even greater significance today. Although the nuclear threat has diminished other seemingly larger threats have appeared. "It's a motherfucker/ don't you know/ If they push that button/ Yo ass gotta go." In today's world "that button" could be anything. To compliment the song the trio concocted a raucous amount of feedback and distortion. It sounded exactly like the special effects we hear in video games and movies about war, the sound of gunfire and bombing, and the peculiar lack of human voices in such chaos. It was moving and at the end the band marched off the stage.

It didn't take long though for them to come back for their encore. Despite having already put on a set clocking in at nearly 2 hours and 20 different songs they were still in good humor and started taking requests from the audience. They joked that they needed to have a quick rehearsal for Upside Down, but then Ira pointed out that they never play it right anyway so it probably didn't matter. After a quick set the show was finished for good and I have no doubt that the trio was exhausted.
Yo La Tengo is a band that continues to defy boundaries. In a music industry that puts everyone into a genre Yo La Tengo refuses to be boxed in. You can hear influences of jazz, rock, country, soul, and just about everything else you can imagine, but the band cannot be defined by such simple terms. Instead they are true musicians. Even though they have been together for over 15 years now they still find new ways to create music and even recreate their old music. Never resting and continuously searching for the perfect performanceムeven when it sounds perfect they persist and it becomes something better than you ever imagined. You see them the first time because you find their albums intriguing. You see them again because you find their musicianship exhilarating. |
